They go above and beyond with essentially every need of their guests, without question. Drinks and food are excellent, and the walk to the beach is roughly 3 minutes.

Hotel in Puerto Viejo
Situated in Puerto Viejo, less than 1 km from Negra Beach, Umami Hotel - Adults Only features accommodation with an outdoor swimming pool, free private parking, a garden and a terrace. my favorite part of the property is that is Adults only. it’s also small and it feels so intimate, perfect for couples. it’s somewhat hidden, so when you are driving to the location you don’t think the hotel is going to look like what you see in the pictures but let me tell you that once you get there and you walk inside it’s beautiful. The staff was amazing. Raymundo was either the manager or big time boss, I don’t know, but him and his staff were so kind and so helpful all the time. Raymundo talked to the guest to see how their day was and if they needed anything. Also breakfast was included and it was a healthy and delicious option. I would definitely stay here if we ever return to Puerto Viejo. I 100% recommend.

In the south Caribbean coast of Limon, if you are traveling with kids, Cahuita is the best place to go. We enjoy excellent Caribbean cousine in a local restaurant called Ricky's and stay all afternoon at the beach, inside Cahuita National Park. We felt safe walking in the downtown area. The locals were very nice when we ask for a good place to eat. We will return to Cahuita as soon as we can.
Tortuguero is a small village in the middle of a national park. Very peacefully and with lovely people. It exists only through tourism and this shows in the prices. To arrive at Tortuguero you have to take first of all a bus from San Jose to Cariari, from Cariari to Pavona another bus and at Pavona there is a boat waiting, which brings you to Tortuguero. The bus company and the boat comany are working together. Also you can take another Route: from Limon or Puerto Viejo to Moin and from there to Pavona. If you are travelling through easter or christmas: arriving and leaving could be difficult. Ask at the busstations or the boatstation. If you need a phone number here in Costa Rica you can call 1113. Also you can ask in your hostel or hotel for help. In my experience the people are very lovely and try to solve your problem. There are restaurants for tourists, expensive but beautiful and on the other side cheap ones, which are called "Sodas". They do not look that beautiful but the food is equally good. Also you can buy everything in supermarkets and cook which is the cheapest possibility. A tip: in Tortuguero does not exist an ATM, so you have to pay with your credit card or bring enough money. While we were in Tortuguero we participated in a canoe tour in the national park in the morning. It was perfect! We saw a lot of animals: a Kaiman, sloths, a lot of birds (for example Tucans and parrots), Iguanas, spiders and so much more. The tour costs 20$ and the entry to the national park 15$. The entry to the park is for the whole day, so we went after the tour in the national park hiking. The trail is 8 km long and very easy. Also: in Tortuguero you can go to the beach but the sea is very dangerous. There are a lot of currents. I hope you enjoy your trip!
Puerto Viejo is filled with Limon's traditions, if you like Caribbean food, you're gonna have a blast. The local food is rich in textures, flavor and aromas. But also if you have a more refined palate, please go visit Koki beach, a piece of culinary heaven in a tropical paradise. Also ask for Milko's italian place in Playa Chiquita, as the sign says "with love from Palermo" . The beauty of the beaches, combined with the flora of the Caribbean make Puerto Viejo a place where you can not only relax, but enjoy every little detail, its fauna is diverse, froms sloths to tiny frogs Puerto Viejo offers it all. The night life is a blast, and you have many places that you can visit, if its dancing and drinks and wild parties they have it. If its an early dinner and a movie, they have that too. It´s for all ages, from kids to seniors. Just pick the right place to stay. Enjoy your trip and have as much fun as I did.
It is a city that is good for a very short time. We only stayed there for one night as we needed to be in limon to catch a flight back to San Jose. Not very touristy, but it worked.
Tortuguero is a must on a visit to Costa Rica, but I was a little disappointed about the amount of wildlife we saw. We did of course see lots of birds, a few caimen and a distant sloth high in a tree but they are not as prolific as the nature programmes would lead you to believe. The Jaguar Trail (2.5 km walk) was not really worth doing.....it was just a muddy jungle full of mosquitoes - saw no wildlife whatsoever. We were there in early December. I do recommend the boat trip from Tortugeuro to Moin (Near Peuto Limon), it is a 3 hour speedboat ride, through jungle canals which break out to the sea in two places (although you dont actually go on the sea). Although slightly long we found it an enjoyable adventure.
Puerto Limon is a port city, period. Unless you are there solely for business meetings, there is no reason to spend the night there. The water is inaccessible, the city itself seems quite dangerous, it is not beautiful, and the food is processed, pre-packaged type food - not authentic, not healthy, not tasty. We spent 2 full weeks in Costa Rica and Puerto Limon is the one city that we could not wait to leave, and regretting choosing to spend a night there. It is interesting, however, to drive though the town to see the port, the ships, the massive scale of the mono-cropped banana farms, and the miles and miles of shipping containers. Drive through, but stay on either side of the city. Cahuita is less than an hour and WONDERFUL!
The city itself is of course an industrial container port but beaches south of Limon Are lovely. The surf was very high the day we were at Westfalia Beach Resort, magestic and roaring! If driving from San Jose to Limon, leave as early as you can and be prepared for slow truck traffic at times through the mountains and nearing Limon. Leave no later than 10:00 am driving Limon to San Jose to be ahead of bulk of semi trucks.
Try to avoid local holidays if you are bothered by litter. It can look a bit rough around the edges but I found that when the sun shines the place takes on a completely different character. Locals are friendly and helpful. Go to the quayside and ask for a boat to be arranged by the parks authority. They are so helpful. We were sorted out with a boat even though the last one had departed to the snorkel site already. Terrific and skilful driver got us back ahead of a great downpour. He was so cool and laid back our concerns of capsizing changed to one of exhilaration as he handled his boat so well on a rough sea. Make sure you go to the national park and explore it with or without a parks guide. Saw an eyelash viper and loads of other stuff despite the numbers of people around. When locals offer help...take it. They are genuine and not after money like so many other places Ive been before. Don't linger in Limon and visit Puerto vieja if you want for a day but linger in Cahuita. It grows on you.
Puerto Limon is just not a place for tourists, nothing to do and it's poor and commercial, not fun to stroll around. But the Playa Wesfalia, a 10 minute taxi away is lovely, good restaurant, nice pool, clean rooms and wonderful staff. Quiet and relaxing getaway.
Only an hour by bus from limon but a much more relaxing place to stay. The park close by is wonderful and worth exploring. Donations accepted to help keep the park in good shape.... trails, etc.
Puerto Limón
There was a problem with the Waze link in the e-mails I received. It led me to completely different property and I was unable to find the Casa Marina establishment. I had to have the taxi driver take me to a different hotel. When I found the number of the couple who rent out the house, I explained the situation and they refunded my fee immediately after our conversation. I will definitely try again the next time I need to go to Limón, Costa Rica. Thank you!
The location is incredible. It’s a few miles from crazy, busy Limon. It’s quiet, has a pool, snacks, restaurant, and you can step right onto the beach. The beach is gorgeous. There are two friendly, an well-behaved hotel dogs. One of them walked a few miles on the beach with us. The rooms are comfortable and clean. Air conditioning worked great! The property feels tucked away and private. The staff were friendly and helpful.
We used this place as a transit hotel with late arrival and early leave the next morning, for this purpose it fit, but I would not stay in Puerto Limon again. The staff was nice and for us it was important to have the possibility for late check in - it worked well. Parking place was like 100 meters ahead from hotel, an area with a guard and fence. Bed was comfortable.
Older hotel, nice grounds, didn’t use pool as traveling through. Restaurant food and breakfast was good. Nice view of Caribbean from room 149. English TV, a first for us after three weeks in Costa Rica. Only booked Limon for the canal tour which isn’t available if criuze ships aren’t in. Didn’t get the tour as they cancelled last minute. Beware!! Good AC.
Lovely apartment with really good beds and amenities with great value for money in limon. Can’t find anywhere for this price in the location! Very lovely hosts who were very helpful when needed only issue was the google maps directions took us to the wrong place
Very nice apartment and room in Puerto Limon, squeaky clean and furnishings very comfortable. The communication with the hosts was great as well. Very good price value, and a good choice if one is staying a few days here.
Right next to the beach, a lot of animals and insects, big room and comfortable bed.
Nice black sand and white sand beaches. There are a selection of room types to choose from at different price ranges. We did a beach front suite. Pool was amazing, not over crowded with people since they have a separate pool for each part of their property. Our room had a full bath and a half bath. We had TV that included apps like Netflix, HBO, Hulu so we weren't stuck with Spanish TV. Exotic wild life on the premises like sloths, monkeys and iguanas. The staff were all amazing!
I liked the thoughtful touches in the rooms, a combination of chic bohemian and Caribbean styles. I woke up to the birds chirping every morning and the whole compound feels like a microclimate because of the plants and trees. Most importantly, Anabelle the host was the most amazing host and made my stay 100x better along with the other people helping her run the property. they also provided a detailed guide which made exploring Puerto Viejo super easy and recommended trustworthy tour guides and local tuktuk guys! I loved my stay and would 100% recommend this place to solo travelers, couples and families!
The hotel is beautiful, the staff is really nice and food at the restaurant is really good. The day we left they packed breakfast for us and the banana bread was delicious!
This is a gem - we booked it as a stopover enroute to Tortuguera and it offered so much more. Fab breakfast, incredible massive swimming pool (Olympic size, slide, jacuzzi and children’s pool), massive children’s play park area. comfy room with air con and a bath. staff were lovely.
The location is gorgeous! Right next to the beach (which isn’t meant for swimming) and a 20 minute walk into the small village. It was Turtle season and we baby sea turtles on our morning walk and at night you can take a guid tour to see the turtles coming onto land to lay there eggs. The beach is closed between 6pm and 6am to protect the turtles. Take note that getting to Tortuguero you need to take a water taxi that leaves from La Panova (large parking area) and the last one leaves at around 4pm. We paid a bit extra (€15 per person in total) to have the watertaxi drop us off at the Mawamba Lodge. We were traveling end of September and the river water was really low so it took almost 3 hours to get to the Lodge but otherwise it is about 1 hour. But we really didn’t mind cause the boat trip is really unique and goes right through the jungle of Tortuguero.
Excelent place, Best place according to price, great food and staff, this is a 10 place, great pool and Beach in front
The lodge is located on a beautiful property overlooking the Pacuare River. The owners Kirk and Joanna and all the staff were excellent. The facilities were very clean and well maintained. The rafting was superb with the best guide Bluche. Highly recommended by me.
Safari Feeling amid the rainforest jungle close to the beach
Excellent location in the forest and on the beach at the same time:-D If you want to spend a couple of days in the middle of the pristine nature, this is the place.
Great experience! Lovely place - jungle feeling, friendly staff, great food, good vibes. We enjoyed our stay very much.
The family from Costa Rica that runs the hostel are amazing, they will make you feel at home and give you all the tips, The kitchen is nice, perfect space to stay for few days.
This property is BEAUTIFUL! The location turned out to be just perfect for our family of 4. The pool and calm tide pools in front of the property were very enjoyable for our small children. The breakfast was delicious. All of the staff were helpful and friendly. We had some issues with the hot water going out and the staff was prompt to fix it. We saw sloths, monkeys, poison dart frogs, macaws, toucans and huge iguanas all on the property. Thanks so much for a really special trip.
We didn't had breakfast at the hotel but we did order dinner on both nights and it was really good! Absolutely worth the money paid for it. Ingredients were fresh, in good amounts and the service was in time.
