The theatre itself looks good from the outside, however they have this ridiculous rule that you cannot bring in drinks nor food into the building. Apparently, this is a rule in every venue... Well I go to loads of venues all around the UK, including venues in the London West End, and I have never been asked to empty my stainless steel bottle of water. They think it is ok to waste water and if you are thirsty, you can fill it up again as there are jugs of water available in the foyer.... I was visiting Hull and had stopped at a lovely cafe for lunch, and bought a homemade brownie to take back with me when leaving Hull on the train later that day. The theatre staff said I had to either eat it before going in or put it in the bin.... I wasn't going to eat it at the theatre. They said I could leave it in the car. Well I don't have a car. I came by train. How ignorant and narrowminded! They basically do not trust any of their visitors. I sat in the park in front of the venue, stuffed my brownie in one of my pockets and went back in. And when they asked me to empty my bottle, I did it right outside the door on the pavement! ridiculous. I saw other ladies in the park stuffing their cereal bars in their bras and pockets too. What a silly rule. The million pounds refurbishment doesn't mean you have to ask people to come with nothing on them. In a world where most people are trying to waste less, you get Hull "New" Theatre asking their visitors to waste their food and water... The tickets were super expensive for the show. Especially for the area. The front stalls were empty and people had chosen to buy the seats at the rear of the stalls. Obviously, seeing this, everyone at the rear moved to the front for the 2nd half of the show. Why would you charge so much for so many seats at the front and have an empty stalls for the artists to see when they first come out? Very disappointing! Not visiting again! I
