This is a popular resort with Portuguese families who make up the huge majority of visitors here - not many Brits and not much English spoken. Big clean beaches - sea very cold even in July, Huge activity on the beach - these people play Basketball and Beach Volleyball all day and all night! Vast range of restaurants and other bars etc, and all very reasonably priced - did not feel we were paying the same prices we were paying in Porto itself.

Great beaches
Unattractive modern town with nice historic plaza but too many nondescript high rise blocks for my taste.
Inexpensive good value restaurants offering great traditional portuguese dishes

Povoa is a great city.
Povoa is a great city. The beach is wonderful, the people are great, and there is plenty to do within the immediate area (Povoa and Vila do Conde). Povoa is also very close to Porto, Braga, Viana do Castelo, and a host of other cool places. The beach is clean and nice.

If you would like to make a fantastic holiday in a local area near Porto. I would suggest this place. This area just 20 minutes from the Airport and the beach is beautiful. I felt the local shops and restaurants aren't expensive at all.

Povoa De Varzim is a bustling little seaside town with everything you could want as a visitor. Mostly popular with Portuguese so English visitors that like home from home (menus in english etc) might wish to think carefully but otherwise I would definitely return. Safe, clean and easily accessible by car or rail.

Everything is perfect at the Big House. The room is lovely, the host is warm and welcoming, the location is minutes away from the beach, restaurants and Casino, the shared spaces are amazing and peaceful ~ especially, the rooftop terrace and living room. Most of all I cannot put into words just how charming the house and Oscar, the host, are. I have stayed in over 100 different places last year and the Big House is my favorite one.
Perfect location just outside Povoa de Varzim, within walking distance to the beaches and to the city with restaurants and supermarkets nearby. We had a room with balcony overlooking the beautiful garden. Free parking indoor and outdoor. Breakfast was included and the buffet offered a variety of cold and warm dishes, also catering some vegan options. Day trips to Porto (by car or by metro), Braga, Guimarães highly recommended.
The pool was fine but very cold! The food was average but as expected for a cost effective option. The rooms were fine; comfy beds and we had a sea view, which was lovely. We also requested interconnecting rooms because we were travelling as a family and that request was granted despite not being guaranteed. The location of the hotel is lovely….right on the beach!
Hotel management and staff were extremely friendly and went beyond ant expectations to be helpful. Manuel provided another group of guests and me a ride to dinner and his son also gave me a ride back to Camino trail the next morning after enjoying a good breakfast at the hotel.
I had an enjoyable and memorable experience at the Hotel Contriz
The hotel sits atop a hill with spectacular views out over the flats and to the Atlantic. It also allows for nice little walks around the close vicinity and is far from any through-roads or traffic, so really a place to relax. Probably often overlooked but higly recommendable as an alternative to a hotel directly on the beach or further inland.
The staff was nice and helpful when it came to check-in , check out and our luggage transfer service. The lobby was nice. The breakfast was good. The location, right on the boardwalk for the Camino Portuguese (littoral route) made it a great choice. Beach was right there. The pool looked nice, but it was too early in the season to swim.
The owner looked like our grandad a lovely man from start to finish ❤️ highly recommend. Gave us an area for bikes to charge got us adaptor , arranged take away for us. Had the cot ready with thick mattress and bedding. Massive buffet lovely food. Should be 7 star hotel at least.
A very friendly hotel with easy access to the beach, good facilities and very accommodating staff. We were delighted to be upgraded to a family suite with a sea view. Very easy access to Porto airport and the hotel allowed us to check out a little later.
On the beach! Nice set up in rooms... not your typical bunk beds. Had a privacy curtain per section of 2 beds, so you could actually stand and change with privacy.
