Two months later and I still remember this retreat as my favorite place I stayed in NZ. The owner, Ian, is exceptionally kind and friendly. He really tries to facilitate friendships between the guests, and gives great advice for the Tongariro crossing as well as other activities in the area. Overall the place has a genuine, easygoing, and social atmosphere that (imo) is not commonly found. I extended my stay here and could have stayed longer!

Beautiful stay with the most gracious hosts. Jason was so helpful as we navigated the area and prepared to hike the Tongariro Crossing. The room was beautiful, quiet, clean, and comfy. The wooden spa in the beautiful garden offered the perfect relief after our epic hike. Great breakfasts and conversation with our hosts. They just couldn't do more for us! Sadly, we were not able to take advantage of the world-famous fishing, but hope to get back to the area one day.

We really enjoyed our stay at Creel Lodge. The room was very nice and clean, we had separate bedrooms, living area and kitchen, and porch. If you walk to the back of the property there is a private gate that leads to a nice walk by the river. The lodge is also close enough to take a short walk into the main town area where there is a grocery store and restaurants. I would recommend staying here and would stay here again.

We had a great stay, very private and quiet. The continental breakfast was an added bonus.
Very friendly hosts and we would definitely stay again.
We highly recommend Tongariro Lodge for dinner. Great food and it's only a few hundred metres away
We walked round the mountain track anti-clockwise.
We walked round the mountain track anti-clockwise. Overall walk was a little harder than I had expected, though got progressively easier each day. Distances can be misleading as track harder and slower day one vs day four or five. Times on DOC maps reasonable guide to relative effort for each section. I loved the back section between Mangaehuehu, Rangipo and Waihohonu huts.

I did the Tongariro Northern Circuit.
I did the Tongariro Northern Circuit. I got the northern explorer from Auckland and then walked from Whakapapa to Mangatepopo hut on that first day. The whole experience was A=mazing. Met some Wonderful people. So four days on the trail and then two nights at Skotel which was great. The food at Skotel was excellent as was the staff.
Another highlight was the gondalier up to the restaurant on Mt Ruapehu. Have to ruin it by saying the service at Tongariro chateau"s cafe was dismal, not at all what you would expect.
Got the bus back to Auckland, next time I would get the train back again.

Tongariro area is magnificent.
Tongariro area is magnificent. Whakapapa still OK, but Top O Bruce has gone from a wonderland to plain bl...... awful. Loud Muzak blaring from PA outside and inside the (total ripoff cafe - small flat white nearing twice that in Taupo, and as for food.... ). Heavy machinery everywhere, heavy helicopter etc etc. Pay heaps for the nice antiseptic gondola if you wish.
