Sandakan is not a city brimming with character and charm.
Sandakan is not a city brimming with character and charm. It is OK and you can find a small number of nice enough places to eat and drink, if you set your mind to it. I would not want to have stayed there more than one day and I won’t be going back anytime soon.

We used Sandakan as the gateway to Turtle Island and the Kinabatangan River. We had lunch in a central hotel which was fine, not a lot for vegetarians but the service was good.
We could have spent a little longer there, it seems easy to get around.

Great little town, wouldn’t spend more than a day or two here unless you were using as a base to go and see the orangutans and rainforest discovery centre or island tours.
Great water front dinners. Shopping mall and grocery store close to water front. Nice vibe.

It’s my home town and I have lots of fond memories.
It’s my home town and I have lots of fond memories. Fresh seafood paradise and amazing mixed cuisine with traditional Chinese, Malaysian food and Indian dishes. Everything in the food market is super cheap and fresh.
The town centre is looking undeveloped and unloved.

Not much to do in the town or much to see and nowhere very nice places to eat/drink. Unfortunately it is quite run down so book a decent hotel to stay in and make the most of the experiences available in the area.

Beautiful place. Lots of nature.
Beautiful place. Lots of nature.
We visited the Borneo Sunbear conservation centre, The orang utan sanctuary, the Rainfoest Discovery Centre and the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Centre.
All above were very interesting and nicely done. However, you do need a car to get about as distances are far from Sabah Hotel.
Ride-sharing app (Grabcar) is a good alternative.
Seafood is cheap, plentiful and yummy in the Chinese restaurants
Staff is nice, always smiling and asking if you need anything. But they are also shy and don't connect.
We rented a car from Avis in Sandakan airport (158 RM per day) and drove to the lodge. Any small car can reach the lodge. There are some pot holes in some places but overall not too bad at all. On the way back we stopped at Sepilok to watch the morning feeding. Contact Avis but Whatsapp as they don't confirm booking.com reservations in a timely matter, +60-17-861-9451.
Basic hotel with basic amenities and facilities. Overall, it is a hotel for someone to get some sleep and rest and nothing more than that. Breakfast is pretty good. The location for the hotel is close to townships with restaurants and eateries outlets - but you need to take a taxi or car. It is not far from these restaurants or shops. If you are not driving, you must get an UBER/Grab. You cannot walk - may take more than 20 mins walk.
*People managing this place are simply amazing.. They contact you 1-day before arrival to arrange for your check-in
*Self check-in was so detailed and easy
*Perfect location
*Great value.. Drinking water and refillable water bottle provided ❤️
* Spotless clean, everything works, Great WIFI
* Gives you free guides for Sandakan and Sepilok, and the lady helped me book the river tour in Sepilok.. I wish I could stay longer.. :)
The hotel had a great view in the reception area as well as from the room. Each room was a separate cabin which had more privacy, we loved it.
The reception staff was very helpful. He sent us to a nice room with good views.
Room was pretty big for 2 people and was clean
We enjoyed our stay in there. Thank you!
I like this place very cheap if u book online and the room is big. Nice and clean... how many times already I stay here.. I'm very recommended this place , hotel very near to all restaurant Starbucks, mcd and bataras .. Next time when we go sandakan we actually book this hotel .
Hotel was near the airport, we needed to stay in an area near the airport and close to the Sepilok Sanctuary, it was perfect for a night and the restaurant across the street was also very nice and clean.
The staff was really helpful and they were all the time answer our questions. The room was comfortable and clean. There are just a few options to stay in Sandakan and this hotel was really good.
Everything went well for me on all expects, except if it could be renovated or upgrade dome of its facilities... its a must stay hotel anyone visiting Sandakan for Bizs or pleasure
Great and Budget hotel. Nice room and comfortable. Just 5 minutes to the main town. Near with the Pasar Malam.
I was book from online. More cheap because they have promo rate.
