Sandakan is not a city brimming with character and charm. It is OK and you can find a small number of nice enough places to eat and drink, if you set your mind to it. I would not want to have stayed there more than one day and I won’t be going back anytime soon.

It’s my home town and I have lots of fond memories. Fresh seafood paradise and amazing mixed cuisine with traditional Chinese, Malaysian food and Indian dishes. Beautiful place. Lots of nature. We visited the Borneo Sunbear conservation centre, The orang utan sanctuary, the Rainfoest Discovery Centre and the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Centre. All above were very interesting and nicely done. However, you do need a car to get about as distances are far from Sabah Hotel. Ride-sharing app (Grabcar) is a good alternative. Seafood is cheap, plentiful and yummy in the Chinese restaurants

We rented a car from Avis in Sandakan airport (158 RM per day) and drove to the lodge. Any small car can reach the lodge. There are some pot holes in some places but overall not too bad at all. On the way back we stopped at Sepilok to watch the morning feeding. Contact Avis but Whatsapp as they don't confirm booking.com reservations in a timely matter, +60-17-861-9451.

Overall, it is a hotel for someone to get some sleep and rest and nothing more than that. Breakfast is pretty good. The location for the hotel is close to townships with restaurants and eateries outlets - but you need to take a taxi or car. It is not far from these restaurants or shops. If you are not driving, you must get an UBER/Grab. You cannot walk - may take more than 20 mins walk.
