The highlight of our trip to Japan. A genuine experience of Shingon Buddhism with friendly and helpful monks to guide us; exquisite traditional plant-based cuisine; magical gardens and powerful ceremony. Luxurious pilgrimage experience. Arigato!

I loved the aesthetics and the energy of the temple. It felt so comfortable and calm. The staff were so friendly and accomodating. And the food was so considered and delicious.

The monks were very welcoming and it was great to attend their ceremonies. The bath facilities were really good. Everything was very clean. Dinner was good and filling.

Lovely people and a great location. I'm not a veggie but I really enjoyed the food.
The train and cable car were thrilling. The forest surroundings gave the town a cozy feel and kept the air so fresh.. The English Guide Club provided a very knowledgeable guide, Mayumi. I learned much more than what you find in books. The burial site is really amazing - a must see. There are some great coffee shops too. It's worthy of a repeat visit.

This temple is very remote.
This temple is very remote. The area is beautiful and the hiking was great. There is an extra tour option of the cemetery. I thought with the price we were paying that this tour should have been included.

Pretty town, huge graveyard, worth exploring but just one...
Pretty town, huge graveyard, worth exploring but just one day needed - Either pay for the decent hotels and experience the true temple koyasan experience or book a lodging and explore the area. Our expensive (but cheapest temple room) felt super touristy and set up. Food was awful. - Its pretty long to get there from Osaka also.

I would definitely recommend the experience of staying one...
I would definitely recommend the experience of staying one night at any of the temples and also the Okonuin Night Tour is a real must! Apart from one person and the Guide (Nobu) the staff of Eko-in was somewhat arrogant and be prepared for an uncomfortable and short night, but a delicious and huge dinner and breakfast. The sights and nature are stunning and beautiful, really serene and perfect to contrast the buzz of every big City. We bought the digital Heritage Pass and tool the Limited Express Train to Koya, I would recommend! Apart from the Bus from the Cable Car to our Temple we walked to every sight by foot, since they are not far from each other and the whole town is a complex of a „Sight“. The Tokugawa Mausoleum was especially astonishing, since it’s full of Japanese history.
We will absolutely visit Koyasan again, but I would not choose a Templestay again.

Okunoin Cemetery night tour is a must do activity.
Okunoin Cemetery night tour is a must do activity. So much of our understanding of Japanese Buddhism and Koyasan’s role in its history was informed by the monk who was our guide. We checked out Okunoin Temple and the cemetery the next day, too. It is a very special place.

It is imperative to stay in a temple - the vegetarian meals...
It is imperative to stay in a temple - the vegetarian meals at our temple were delicious and had many courses. The town has so many temples and good hiking opportunities, we could have stayed longer - but my husband was too much of a foreigner to stay in the temple for two nights. The wonderful Okunoin Cemetery and shrine with an ancient forest was a special treat - we spent an entire morning there, and it was a nice surprise that the buddhist monks take their stewardship of the natural environment so seriously that there is even a forestry department of the temple. Other temples were equally awe-inspiring.
If you’re like me and dream of visiting Koyasan but have to travel on a budget, this is the place for you! The owner is so kind and generous with his advice about enjoying your time exploring this incredible, historic temple town and he even makes great food, too! I highly recommend staying there. It’s also awesome how close it is to the Okunoin Cemetery, which was my favorite part of Koyasan, and also makes attending the morning prayer service much easier because of its close proximity!
I really liked the food, especially the dinner - it was amazing! The futons were fluffy and the public bath was nice. I really enjoyed watching some TV after eating dinner and warming up in a hot bath. The monks were polite and answered all of our questions- I did not experience any rudeness that the other reviews are talking about. They even told us a lot about the current state of the temple after the morning ceremony was over.
It's a beautiful temple in the stunning mountains of Koyasan. The temple has a well manicured garden and a vast space to explore. It is reasonably close to the entrance to the graveyard walk. The food was a lovely vegetarian and tofu meal and they did give an option for sake or beer. The staff was welcoming and spoke very good english. They gave a great overview of the morning ceremony and included a participatory element.
Beautiful temple and traditional room. Very welcoming staff and we especially enjoyed the wonderful food (like nothing we’ve ever tasted, loved that it was vegan but so flavourful and varied) and morning prayer. We had a wonderful stay, but don’t expect all the bells and whistles - this is a temple stay not a hotel! Good location, easy walk to everywhere.
The area Jokiin is situated in was perfect for my stay. It was in close proximity to all the historic and spiritually significant sites I wanted to see. The staff there are excellent, very passionate people who are maintaining a beautiful tradition. While I myself do not speak Japanese, the staff were more than accommodating for me and my needs.
The temple is in a great location in the middle of Koyasan. Check in was easy and staff were nice. Our rooms looked out onto the lovely garden. Room was comfortable and clean. Lodgings were close to Kongōbu-ji and a 15 minute walk to Okunoin Cemetery. We enjoyed the prayer ceremony in the morning.
Ideally situated directly next to Okunoin. Ryochi was very nice and helpful, he speaks perfect english and communication was easy, which was refreshing in Japan. I slept very well and the fire was very nice to warm up after freezing temperatures exploring Koyasan!
Very friendly staff. Exceptional dinner that allows you to try different kinds of ingredients we didn't taste in Japan anywhere else. The morning ceremonony is very interesting. Really close to most highlights in Koyasan. Would repeat this expererience.
stunning location, gorgeous temple, gardens, and our room was incredible! we stayed in the peacock room and felt like royalty. the meals were beautiful, the services with the monks were moving, everyone was friendly and Koyasan itself was gorgeous.
Located in Koyasan itself, the main Buddhist attractions of the area are all just around the corner. We also got to participate in a morning prayer service service with the head monks of the temple and were served a delicious vegan breakfast.
Located in a quiet neighborhood in Koyasan, ,it's a valued alternative to the other ryokans in town. The beds were very comfortable and the room spacious. The restaurant next door was excellent and catered to my friend's gluten allergies.
The room is spacious, beautifully decorated and has a nice view of the garden. The dinner was delicious and an amazing experience. Location is very convenient for visiting Koyasan. A small but functional bath is great for relaxing.
an amazing experience all round. traditional ryokan style accommodation in temple lodgings. exceptional meals all served in traditional style. brilliant location right next to the
main multi temple complex.
so confortable for a temple! the staff is very nice and the temple is beautiful. the ceremony of Goma Fire was amazing.
such a nice place to do meditation and explore Koyasan!
The family room is spacious, very clean and very quiet. The location is right in the middle between Koyasan station and Okunoin Mae. The owner couple were very nice.
Thank you so much Nori for a great experience. We will miss the guesthouse and Koyasan. I will definitely come back again the next time I am visiting Koyasan.
Staff were amazing and such an incredible experience. The temple was what we expected and more! Would definitely stay here again if we were to visit Koyasan!
