The Smailholm Tower looked interesting, but it's a bit of a climb for the slightly less mobile. We arrived just as the warden was locking up the car park at 5 p.m., so were only able to walk up to the tower and look at it from the outside. Kelso (about 6 miles away) is an attractive, small town, with good shopping facilities, including a few independent stores. Floors Castle is well worth a visit, with a host of very old, Scottish historical relics. Similarly, a little beyond Galashiels, we found Robert Smail's Print Works and Traquair House, both at Innerleithen (about 15 miles) fascinating. Thoroughly recommend this area as one to explore for those interested in Scottish heritage.
