Royal Britannia Hotel, hotel in Ilfracombe

Located in the picturesque Devonshire town of Illfracombe is the Royal Britannia Hotel.

The room was clean and spacious. Beds were super comfy. I slept like a log and we spent the majority of our time on our beds so the fact that we were comfortable was ideal. Breakfast was filling and freshly cooked. My son had the kippers which made a nice change for him as it's not something usually offered on a breakfast menu. I had the full english as I'm a creature of habit, both of which were just what we needed to set us up for the day and very reasonably priced too. We booked in advance which saved us a couple of pounds but would have happily paid the full price. Christmas day lunch in their sister restaurant was amazing and well worth the price. The staff in both sites were amazing, helpful, polite and courteous.

The Devonian is a complete delight, the decor, the friendliness, the delicious breakfast, the location. I highly recommend The Earlsdale Bed and Breakfast! Owners Jim and Lewis’ professionalism, passion, creativity, and attention to detail shined through in everything from the chic design of the B&B, to the vegan and gluten free chocolate that awaited me in my room (custom to my specific dietary restrictions). My room was spacious, luxurious, and comfortable. As an interior designer, I especially appreciated the soothing interior lighting and high end design materials and finishes, all of which came together to blend modern luxury with the unique historical elements of the building. The included breakfast featured a beautifully laid self service station with homemade and locally sourced delicacies. I very much enjoyed the “Full English” that Jim so kindly prepared for me, which accommodated my strict vegan and gluten free diet. I’m confident that my friends who enjoy meat and dairy would have also been very satisfied with the other unassuming, yet elevated hot breakfast offerings. Thank you Jim and Lewis for being such attentive and accommodating hosts! I very much look forward to staying at The Earlsdale again in the future!

Ilfracombe is a lovely place to visit, however please be aware how hilly it is. Walking down to harbour is easy but the return journey can be a bit of a slog. Had gluten free fish and chips from Lynbay fish and chip shop. Gluten free cream tea from St James tea garden. Wasn't overly impressed with the beach as it mainly slate pebbles, but Woolacombe is not far away with golden sands.

Many part of this town including its HIGH STREET are looking terribly run down and rough. So too some pubs ... I'm sure it will perk up in higher season but money needs to be spent on its appearance . The streets felt as safe as most places in Britain and some Bistros and cafes were delightful. Roads are narrow and some extremely vertiginous . Parking can be an issue in high season I guess.

Ilfracombe is worth a visit and is probably better in the summer than when we visited. We preferred Woolacombe and Puttsborough beach is great for surfing. We walked around Baggy Point and saw some amazing views. Well worth a visit.

There were some really lovely parts of Ilfracombe and some not so nice , like most towns . Most of the architecture is stunning with old and new together but some new don't fit in. The scenery on the coast is amazing with lots of craggy coves and you can walk along the South West Coast Path . There is a small harbour where a stunning Damien Hirst statue is of Verity ,Statue of Justice if I remember correctly Parts of Ilfracombe are quite steep but there are slopes and some roads on the flat. We ate Sunday lunch at the Thatched Inn , had Breakfast at the Lime Kiln Cafe down by a cove . We loved it.

Lovely rugged coastline all still very natural.

Lovely rugged coastline all still very natural. The town however was a little disappointing in terms of felt a bit run down and lacking in investment in some areas. Worth a visit altho not too long as I think more useful to use as a base to travel than a holiday in as wasn’t enough to offer.

As we were attending a wedding it was a good location for us but probably not the right time of year for shopping etc as most of the shops were empty or closed down. I'm sure its much better in the summer!

Terence and Piper were excellent and accommodating right from the start. This is a lovely and really well thought through hotel where the care and attention to detail from the owners can be seen throughout; from the fantastic colour scheme and decoration, to the comfy beds and delicious breakfast. This was our first visit to Ilfracombe and I couldn’t recommend this place enough.

There wasn't anything not to like about The Rocky Cove. Jonah and Nicki were very welcoming and hospitable. The bedroom was clean and fresh and has everything for a relaxing stay. We had a bath with a separate shower which is a winner. Breakfast was filling and so much choice. Would highly recommend and if we find ourselves in Ilfracombe again we shall look them up!
