If you want to experience the Amazon in an indigenous community out in the middle of nowhere, La Ceiba is WONDERFUL. Beautiful setting, kind people, great tours of the area. My group felt so well taken care of. We met other interesting travelers, had great conversations, were really let in to the indigenous communities around us. I would go back in a heartbeat.

If you are looking to get into the jungle and experience the nature of the Amazon up close and personal, look no further. We liked everything about it - from the guides who met our ferry and led us to the hostel, to the really delicious food (the best in the Amazon, in my opinion), to the activities, to the troop of monkeys who visited for bananas, and, of course, the hammocks. We took a great hike to one of the oldest trees in the area and heard stories about the spirit who live in these trees. We also took a trip to visit a nearby village and learned how to paint with all natural dyes as well as watched a pretty exciting soccer match. The staff was friendly, helpful, engaging sharing stories, meals and a killer game of pachisi with us. James, the owner, developed the hostel to highlight the indigenous people of the area and it is entirely staffed by local people (a lot of his family!). His love of the Amazon shines here.

Cabañas alto del Aguila is really a unique place. Fray and Helena provide a welcoming environment in the middle of the jungle, with cute monkeys and parrots present on site. The rooms are simple and “roots”, but comfortable and match the environment. You get what you come for, peace and quiet right there on the Amazone river.
