This hotel was a lovely surprise. Booked because it's close (literally a few metres) from the bus station, it turned out to be a very comfortable and quiet place, surrounded by a small jungle. There's also a big restaurant, open all day and offering a good choice. The staff, both at the reception and at the restaurant, were very kind.

Large rambling hotel with individual or joined garden rooms in beautiful gardens full of wildlife including 2 secluded swimming pools and walks. Lovely staff and good food. The almost-cinematic view of foliage and incredible variety of birds (and frogs at night) from the dining area is really special.

Such a great place to bird and see such a variety of birds! (We saw 70 different species)
The bridge and views from the bridge are also brilliant and a great place to spot toucans from.
We walked all the Rainforest trails and loved them all.
Staff super friendly throughout.
Totally recommend a guided birdwatching tour too and a special shout out to William, who was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate.
Rooms were also excellent and had a nice terrace where we saw toucans, mot mots and squirrels.
One of our Costa Rica accommodation highlights!

We loved everything about this place. ALL of the staff were so kind and friendly from the cook whose food was delicious, to Maita on front desk who lent us flash lights to find owls and made us great fresh juices, to the gardeners who found sloths for us to look at!
The free breakfast was good, I saw someone criticising it in the reviews but for free we had fresh fruit, rice and beans, egg, toast, jam and butter/cream cheese with a coffee. You could pay for more but that was more than enough.
The lodge itself was excellent. The rooms were nice and colourful and comfortable, including chairs outside - perfect for birdwatching from. The grounds were so well kept and included plenty of walking trails and a private beach right out to the river where you can see different birds and monkeys. We also did a boat tour that Maita booked for us with oasis and it was very good for herons, kingfishers, wood rails (and we saw a crocodile and caiman too).
There's also a pool which was the perfect temperature and good for watching birds from. We saw a lot of birds we hadn't seen at la selva and it was very easy to see them around the gardens.
Would highly recommend and hope to stay again. Beautiful place.

We spent two nights at Selva Verde Lodge during our Costa Rica trip. The lodge offers beautiful, spacious rooms with air conditioning, which were honestly the best accommodations we had during our trip. The property is well-maintained, featuring its own trails, a restaurant, a souvenir shop, and daily guided activities. The staff is incredibly friendly and always willing to help.

Really enjoyed this house - breakfast served by Wendy’s mama was delicious and an highlight of the trip!! The house is accessible by car but then isolated and so peaceful. You can hear all nature around and observe birds anytime. Nice furniture (bed, kitchen, balconies…). I highly recommend!

Sarapiqui is a busy town, the commercial hub for the local area. We really enjoyed an excellent river trip, the guide was knowledgable and entertaining. We stayed at nearby Selva Verde using our own Hire Car to get around, driving is easy enough although this is a major highway

A stunning adventure with lots of memories.
A stunning adventure with lots of memories. Woke up to howler monkeys chatting in the treetops above my cabin. Great hikes, beautiful views.
Guides are super knowledgeable and enthusiastic to be there.
Something that's extra great? The employees--the guides, the cooks, etc.--all seem genuinely happy. It's clear that they're well taken care of and appreciated!

While there are many Adventure tours available, we opted for the birding activities. We took one guided tour at Tirimbina and one at La Selva. Both provided unique species and I highly recommend taking the extra time to also go to La Selva. Air Conditioning is highly recommended to help you stay comfortable after a day in the heat and humidity, which the region is known for.

We visited Sarapiquí in 2010 and we wanted to return. What we have found (in a period of 10 years), has been a significant increase of tourism and the expansion of the urban areas in the town. Now, there are more people living in Sarapiquí.

People were very friendly .
People were very friendly . Not much English speaking but we got by. We got out into the country with locals and really had a good time. A jungle tour is a must as it is still a lot of raw areas left. Great bird watching. It is not as hot as the beach areas and roads and driving is quite nerve wracking at times.
Amazing and immersive rainforest experience. The forest itself is the true star of the show. The diversity of wildlife is outstanding. It was so special to have the researchers for the guides (you get a free morning tour if you stay there and we paid for a night tour). We saw and learned so much. we stayed for two nights with full board and loved every moment.
Its not a hotel and we really enjoyed that it was something different. We embraced it as a place for learning and enjoyed that everyone was there for the same reason.
Everything was literally outside your front door. We did not have to go on the trails to find any of the animals. They were in the trees surrounding the property. The restaurant was reasonably priced (actually cheap for a hotel) and had something for everyone. The guides were nice and knowledgeable. the hotel staff friendly and helpful. The roofs are made of a material so you really hear the rain which I liked. In the morning you can open your curtains and look outside and you feel like you are in the rainforest because you are.
This place was so beautiful! When we arrived they had fruit "cocktail" drinks for us that were delicious! (and free!)... The staff made us feel like celebrities. The place is gorgeous with Bambu walkways above the ground. You almost feel like you're in a tree house. The staff was super prompt and helpful. The free breakfast was freshly prepared and also delicious. We wished we had booked more nights here!
This was only 20 minutes from the sarapiqui Outdoor Center where we had an amazing time rafting!
We had an amazing stay. The location of the house is perfect, surrounded by nature. Many birds and other animals to see! Wendy and her family are so kind. Breakfast and dinner, made by Rita, tasted really good. Oso the dog showed us the way to a beautiful waterfall and swimming place nearby. Sarapiqui is a nice region, a lot of nature to explore without crowds. Don't hesitate, just book this place. You won't regret it.
We had a lovely time at Gran Gavilán. Owners and staff were very friendly and helpful, creating a very welcoming atmosphere. The rooms were large and comfortable, breakfast was great (we would definitely also recommend the restaurant for dinner), and the lodge is ideally situated for outings like La Selva and rafting. We would recommend this place to everyone visiting the Sarapiquí region.
Five stars for this beautiful, remote, nature lovers’ paradise nestled next to Braulio GC Carillo National Park near Sarapiquì River. Staff are very friendly, knowledgeable about ecology & passionate about environmental conservation and forest regeneration. Lodgings and food simple, picturesque & wholesome. Daily night walks magical and teeming with life.
A nice lodge with very spacious but scarcely furnished rooms. The walking trails are nice and give you a first glimpse into a tropical forest. The food in the restaurant was good. We chose the hotel for its proximity to La Selva Research Station. The location is pleasant and quiet. We would stay here again.
Quiet, authentic hotel on the edge of town. Lots of space for short hikes and looking for birds and other animals. Owners and staff couldn’t have been more accommodating. Dinner on site after a busy day was a retreat and enjoyed immensely.
The hotel is located at the edge of a beautiful national park. We had access to the park which was great. The room was basic but clean. There was an air-condition in the room that worked well. The breakfast was ok.
The hotel has lots of green areas with many birds, frogs and sloths. The restaurant is good, the rooms are nice and the staff is very friendly. We can definitely recommend this hotel in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui.
Very nice breakfast and very helpful and friendly staff at the reception..They helped me to sort out Taxis to Sarapiqui and gave me lots of help with onward travel arrangements to the bus station
Great location to explore the Sarapiqui area. The kids loved the pool. Nice breakfast and comfortable rooms. There is a nice walking trail just behind the Lodge. We would stay here again!
A decent hotel with nice surroundings. A pretty pool with a nice view into the forest. With luck you can observe some wildlife as well. Spacious and comfortable rooms.
Beautiful hotel. It was a great place to relax. We walked to the cascades (one was guided) and they are splendid. The food was good and staff was friendly.
