We were strongly advised not to go out at night and even during the day it is risky. Our hotel did have a shuttle to a mall. Johannesburg is a great jumping off spot for all of Southern Africa and I may go back. The tour to Soweto we took was very interesting as was the Apartheid Museum. I lived in Pretoria for 5 years before moving to the UK. Pretoria has its own special uniqueness. I was pleasantly surprised to see how many of the smaller shopping centers had been upgraded and new shops added. However, the road works on Solomon Mahlangu Drive have been going on for years, I have been gone for 2 and a half years, and that particular road is still a nightmare. One word of warning to travellers is don't presume that because the traffic light is green you can go, way too many drivers think a red light means they can keep going. Saw a few nasty accidents while there. I found in general, SA has become ridiculously expensive, especially when eating out. Southern Sun is an excellent computer hotel on the doorstep of OR Tambo airport. The rooms are comfortable and the shuttle service from and to the terminal is very good. The hotel has all the amenities business travellers require including a gym and pool. The bar and restaurant are also excellent. Centurion is a very nice place to visit. Especially if you just want to get aways from your norm and go relax somewhere else. It's a very beautiful town and very safe according to me. It has bolts and ubers everywhere and the mall has every store you might ever think off. It also has a Gautrain station which is huge plus for me.
