- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.9Excellent - What previous guests thought, 59 reviewsIncredible ryokan experience! We loved the tranquil scenery which overlooked Lake Biwa. Breakfast and dinner were exceptional and traditional. We stayed two nights and the meals were never repeated. We loved the in room outdoor onsen overlooking the lake and the massage chair was a nice touch. A very relaxing stay. The staff was very friendly and really tried to speak English to us. We had no communication barriers. Will definitely return and highly recommend this ryokan. Very memorable experience.Guest review byToddUnited States

You have a very great view of the lake. Room is very spacious. It's our first time as well to stay at a traditional Japanese room, wear yukata and it was a great experience. Excellent dinner and breakfast. They can pick you up at the train station which is very convenient.Guest review byCharlotte LeiUnited Arab Emirates

There is a good fitness center on 3rd floor, a bit expensive but worth it. This is an outstanding value, looking forward to being in Moriyama and staying again.Guest review byDodiJapan

Enjoy the 1st day in Kyoto.
Enjoy the 1st day in Kyoto. Do the Hop On Hop Off bus (both Blue and Red Lines), which stops at all the major sites. Then train to Otsu for relaxing stay at Lake Biwa. Go on a sightseeing / luncheon cruise or organised trips - example the cable car at Sakamoto. Plenty of places to eat including 36th floor of Lake Biwa Otsu Princess Hotel with great views.Guest review byGregory FortuinNew Zealand - 8.0

Hikone is mostly a student town with the castle, and close to the largest lake - Lake Biwa. The sports complex is pretty nice and cool too. I recommend coming here during Sakura for the castle or even snow fall. 1-2 days is enough for a stop for sure.Guest review byTanyaAustralia - 8.0

Nagahama is great place for renting a bike and cycling around. We got e-bikes from rent place near station. Museums are good - take the Nagahama museum pass for 2 days. Shops, boutiques and restaurants are open around 11-16. No much hope to find any place where to dinner in the evening. Luckily there is a grocery shop in Station, and they have good sushi, onigiri and gyoza selection. For breakfast there is 1 cafe in the station, and very lovely Sheep cafe (opens at 11, fluffy pancakes and cafe to eat in). Anegawa onsen was very good as we were in Nagahama when it was very cold outside.Guest review byPiretEstonia - 10.0

We were cycling around Lake Biwa and I was deciding between to stop overnight in Makino or Takashima. The area is very windy and somehow there was a lot of cars passing this street where the accommodation is located. There is no convenient store, 2 restaurants nearby and a local sake brewery. There wasn’t much to walk around for us. The accommodation is fantastic, we couldn’t ask for more.Guest review byWai LengSingapore - 8.0

Maibara is a great 'gateway' location for basecamp if you're exploring Kansai [ie less expensive lodging than staying in Kyoto or Osaka] utilizing the shinkansen. If you're a first-timer in Japan and hoping to hit scenic historic sites, you should especially consider it; access to Nagahama Castle and Hikone Castle is super easy [and both are off-the-beaten path where foreign tourists are concerned [if you're at either mid-week, even in 'high' season (ie cherry blossom or autumn leaf viewing), you'll like encounter few foreign tourists], but quick walks from main local JR stations] *Photos attached are @ Hikone Castle, 1 station south of Maibara station; about a 10 minute walk from Hikone Station]Guest review byAdamUnited States - 10.0

A quiet little town, a great place to visit to avoid the crowds of tourists. Make sure to take the rope-way to the top of Mount Hachiman for a breathtaking view of Lake Biwa and the surrounding area. Also a good place to try out the local Omi beef, one of Japan's top quality wagyu beef brands.Guest review byMatheusNetherlands - 6.0

From my perspective, there wasn't much to do within a mile walk of the property. Only one restaurant off site in that mile two convenience stores and if you walk a bit further a pretty mellow "redlight" districtGuest review byJeffUnited States - 8.0

Hikone is a pleasant place, but not one you should plan a trip around. Possibly best for a day trip. The atmosphere and climate is reminiscent of small cities in New England. The lake is pleasant, but if you're interested in kayaking you should try towns on the western shore of the lake, even though they're more expensive resort towns. Hikone castle is obviously the reason to come here, but there are a few nice local restaurants as well. Other than that, it's mostly auto shops and people revving the engines of their souped-up cars every night.Guest review byPeterJapan - 10.0

Beautiful, quiet city with an old Japan feel, no tourists, beautiful lake views and extremely beautiful and powerful shrines, as well as a lively but not overcrowded city center during Matsuri season. The perfect destination if you enjoy a quieter Japan, away from the crowds and noise of bigger city. Just please, don't turn it into the next overcrowded tourist destination.Guest review byPaulFrance - 10.0

Takashima is a wonderful destination, especially for those seeking a peaceful retreat. A highlight of our trip was a charming bakery near the train station. The owner doesn't speak English, but a little Google Translate goes a long way. The bakery is stunning, offering some of the best pastries we've ever had, and my kids loved it too. Takashima is a quiet and serene place, a refreshing contrast to bustling cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. It's perfect for a family getaway to relax and unwind. The lake is absolutely stunning, with fresh air and beautiful blue waterGuest review byWeijiaUnited States
