In winter a few days was ample as it gets cold and can be difficult to get around. I would consider going back in the summer and staying longer so I can explore some of the outer towns and areas in Hokkaido via a car.
We really enjoy our stay in Sapporo. Our hotel is within the Susukino area so there is no problem with us in going the venue of Snow festival at Susukino and Odori Park. So many food to choose from at Odori park. Not able to explore sapporo nor some other part of Hokkaido because it is winter. If you want to explore Sapporo or Hokkaido winter time is not advisable. Planning to go back during spring time.
Tomakomai is relaxing, convenient, the last stop on the line. It's nice if you want to get away from a busy city & want to experience a quiet town in Hokkaido.
I can’t get enough of Sapporo as a gateway to the rest of Hokkaido. It’s got all of the standard Japanese city checkpoints, with a far more relaxed feel. Great town
Enjoy Sapporo lots! Lots of snow! And cold weather. Just our cups of tea! Some highlights of our trips: Fabulous stay at beautiful snow covered Asahikawa township . Enjoyed its wintry weather and beautiful scenery An wonderful experience to Asahikawa zoo An unforgettable experience with dog sledging with Dan & Kyoko @ Moonlightladies. Fantastic ride! A magical visit to Tsu Dome site wirh tge free fhuttle bus in Asahikawa! City walk of beautiful Sapporo city Cold but enjoyable walk besides Otaru canal Enjoyed the famous Hokkaido gigantic crabs & seafood🦀🦐🐙🐚 Great family time with Ice fishing with Hokkaido Treasure Island Travel Inc. So much fun n laughter catching the tiny fish! A very fantastic family holiday
Was just transiting in chitose to Tokyo after a few days drive around parts of Hokkaido and managed to catch lake shikotsu. Seems like a nice place. Would have stayed longer if schedule had permitted.
Excellent food choices in Sapporo, due in part to their agricultural heritage. Best sea food, dairy products (milk, cheese and ice cream and fruits (don't miss the Yubari melon!) Weather in early spring was pleasant, albeit some rains. This was essentially a eating holiday. Miso based ramen, excellent sushi, ice cream, great beer, etc. Try the Sapporo Beer Museum and nearby beer garden. Eat all of you can Genghis Khan lamb barbecue, King Crabs and Draft Beer. Buy most of your Hokkaido delicacies in the airport. Arrive earlier before checking in.
I was in Sapporo for Sakura Full Bloom and it was incredible! Also, I enjoyed going to the Sapporo Beer Museum. I ate so much delicious food - Curry Soup and Hokkaido Ramen in particular were delicious. It is like a big city with many shops but not as busy as places like Tokyo.
Summary: Value for money! (There was discount then.) Forgot to mention, I am glad also to have direct airport bus services to CTS airport. Very convenient. Rooms. for improvement: APA was not my first stop at Hokkaido. Before going to APA, I stayed near Susukino station. I didn’t know I had direct bus to APA. I made my way to APA by train and then by bus from Makomanai station. I only know upon arrival, when I asked for more information on buses, surrounding map, airport bus to hotel, etc. These were on 2 separate days with different staff. All these are good information for travelers. Would encourage APA to provide these good information at the website clearly. There are added value to APA and it allows travelers to plan better. The toilet is a bit dull and old fashion. Maybe can add little decorations to brighten it up.
There isn't much to do in Asahikawa, we spent a night we walked to the park and walked in the town (within an hour or two). Just a town to transfer to other locations in Hokkaido. There are some bars and restaurants, and the big attraction is the zoo.
Asahikawa
Uniquely local. We got to stay in a local, Hokkaido Japanese house. Very clean. Full kitchen. We picked up some breakfast items from a convenience.store nearby and cooked in the kitchen. We had a big triple room. We also had a long chat with the host. The house is very nicely, artistically decorated, Hokkaido style, reminding me of the frontier spirit back in wild Wyoming/Montana. The Budget rental car is just across the street, very convenient for us to pick up the rental car in the morning. Thank you, Chi, for taking care of us.
The enthusiastic service quality of the staff is very good, especially after Mr. Masato Takano knew that my wife liked to enjoy flowers too much, he personally gave us some garden information and recommended a good garden at breakfast time the next day. The facilities and design in the room are very good, especially the hot spring pool in the room. Teppanyaki and Kaiseki dinner are super delicious and equisite; Japanese and Western breakfast are also super delicious. If we have a chance, you will definitely check in again in Hokkaido.
Akankohan
Best place in Hokkaido! Breakfast and Buffet Dinner included: great choices of Japanese, Chinese and Western food. Fresh food and high level choices. Lakeside view during meals. Great Onsen, friendly staff, shuttle to parking area fast and upon request. Big rooms, nice tatami styles, 5 people come for daily room cleaning at once and job is done so quickly, get as much drinking water as you need, afternoon can eat free Hokkaido potatoes, nice art exhibition area from woodwork, close to Ainu village, very friendly tour desk.
Shari
The house is close to station SHIRETOKO SHARI. It also has a parking place in front of the house, seems can park two cars. Next to the house, there was a French restaurant and Izakaya, a convenient place for dinner. And a Secomart which is the convenient store of Hokkaido located opposite of the house. The house has two twin-bed rooms, one Japanese styled room with Tatami, feels good for 5-6 people. I would appreciate the host, he shared us some information about the house and restaurant, made us a wonderful journey.
Noboribetsu
The onsens are exceptional and the location could not be better. It basically overlooks Hell Valley. The bedding in the traditional Japanese rooms are really comfortable. Also, the staff are above and beyond helpful! The manager helped us to get a bus to Niseko as our next destination after we were stressing so badly about having to backtrack for hours on a train (Noboribetsu to Niseko can be tricky). If anyone would like to know it's called the Hokkaido Resort Liner! THANKS DAI ICHI TAKIMOTOKAN :D
Kutchan
We loved the family run Japanese owned Pension White Bear 🐻❤️❄️ The ofuro at the end of a day on the slopes and the food recommendations from the owners made our stay brilliant. The owners were always so pleased to help us out. The view of Yotei from our room was beautiful. It was walking distance from Lawson, Seicomart, the bus stops to Kitchen station/other niseko resorts. The food stalls next door were so tasty and gave us a real flavour of Hokkaido. Thank you for a magical atmosphere 🙏❤️
Shari
We stayed here for 2 nights in November 2023. The Japanese-Style Twin Room - Non-Smoking - West Wing, the room was tidy, very spacious and overlook the Sea of Okhotsk. Internationl and Japanese original dish in buffet breafast and dinner. Lots of choices and very delicious dishes. There are male and female Onsen, also you can book a private Open Air Onsen Bath. Onsite Hokkaido souvenir shops for shopping and tax refunds as a big bonus. We would denfinely stay here again if we go to Shari again.
Noboribetsu
Loved the resort and onsen. The outdoor bath was incredible and we loved the private bath in our room. The hotel is kept very clean, but the private bath in our room had quite a bit of mold everywhere. For such an upscale resort, I was surprised that part wasn't kept cleaner. Walkable to Noboribetsu's major sights--Jigoku Dani and the bear park. We wanted a classic Hokkaido onsen town experience, and Noboribetsu Grand Hotel and this cute little mountain town delivered!
Hakodate
Very short distance from the JR station, reasonable price, fully equipped cozy Japanese style room, amazing decoration, kind staff:) (their English are pretty good 🫡 I even got a present when I checked out 😭 Thank you so much! This is my favourite hotel in Hokkaido🥺❤️It’s a pity that I only spent one day in Hakodate, if I have the chance to travel to Hokkaido again, I will definitely book it again. I highly recommend this hotel to all the travellers!
The staffs were Super helpful, they really taking care of all details. The hotel is just few mins walk from main shopping area with a walkable distance from JR. The breakfast was extremely good (mainly Japanese style foods I love it). The room was new and twice bigger than the hotels around JR (bathtub is also big). I am glad I chose it for the last day of my 20 days trip in Hokkaido, everything is perfect! Def come back when visiting Hokkaido!
I like the location, it is near the station and the Hokkaido university. Breakfast was a little pricey but superb and delicious. I suggest to buy at least one to two breakfast and buy the rest at the convenience store in front of the hotel. There is also a coin laundry machine which is very convenient for a long term stay. I had not time to visit the onsen so no comment for this. The room is actually spacious in Japanese standard room.
Hakodate
This was our first time visiting Hokkaido, wanted to experience traditional Japanese style accommodation, this place didn’t disappoint us , the whole facility is really nice and clean, it has being decorated very well by the owner. In addition, the owner is very kind and warm, we have talked a lot even we didn’t understand each very well, she had given us a small dedicated gift before we left. Hope we have chance come here again!
Teshikaga
Aki and Taka are lovely people. I had great times with them, enjoying delicious home-cooked food. As well as making culinary discoveries, I enjoyed learning more about Hokkaido and Japan in general from them. Their house, located in a beautiful and peaceful setting, near JR station, is very beautiful and cosy. I loved sleeping in the Japanese-style bedroom. The Akan region is magnificent... I'd love to come back soon!
Obihiro
Full serviced kitchenette for cooking- so easy to buy from supermarket and enjoy fresh produce (which is what Hokkaido is all about) We had everything we could ever need, no need to bring your toothbrush! Japanese hospitality was top notch and accomodating. The room was very comfortable, we had space to ourselves to relax after a long day. The house was situated in a quiet neighbourhood, so it was easy to get in and out.
Shintoku
Even though I was the only guest, the host Nemoto-san took great care of me. He told me all about the local area, recommended some good events, and even shared a sampler of some amazing Japanese whiskies! We spent most of the night talking about various travels, and it was a great time. In the morning, I had a delightful breakfast of local Hokkaido produce and even a packed lunch of delicious breads!
A nice hotel to stay at Sapporo. It's near the Hokkaidō Government Office and the Sapporo Clock Tower. A little confused when I checked in because the reception was at 6F and there was a restaurant in the same building. The staff are friendly and can speak English. The room is tidy and clean. They also have some extra facilities like washing machines, dryers, ... The breakfast is good.
Date
Real Hokkaido hospitality at its best. Would recommend to anyone looking to experience home life in Japan, especially if you like exploring and onsen hot springs - some of which are free. The host took amazingly good care of us and was happy to chat (Japanese). Natural hot spring water in the bath and geothermal heating is always good! Warm and cosy house.
I liked everything. The hotel was impressive, the room was large for Japan's standards, the location is just across the road from Bibai's JR line, the hotel was quiet, it is just 30 minutes away from Sapporo by train which I found to be ideal and quality/price is better than any hotel in Hokkaido's capital (which I found rather expensive).
Convenient Location. Walking distance to Nijo Market, Ohori Park, Sapporo Tower, Hokkaido Univerity, Hokkaido Botanical Gardens, and much much more. Easy access for subways and trains. Exceptional Buffet Breakfast. Not only was the food exceptional but the views of Sapporo from the breakfast venue was fabulous. Hotel Staff very very attentive.
totally satisfied with this hotel: dedicated man-to-man service, clean and spacious room conditions. And it was totall affordable. Amenities were overall of high quality and abundance despite self-service providence. Neiborhood attractive spot Nakajima park is a good place for exercising in the morning and enjoying winter vibes of Hokkaido :)
