We arrived in late afternoon at hotel and toured island first in evening hours - great idea as less crowded and still light enough to wander the streets and alleys. Toured the abbey the next morning - around 11. Already getting crowded - should have started earlier. But well organized and flows well within the Abbey. Cherbourg is dominated by a huge harbour where your ferry comes in. The town itself is long from east to west, spreading out from the harbour. From north to south it is much smaller. The harbour area and the promenades are worth walking around and the central area at the Place Charles de Gaulle is the best area to relax in. It's also the ideal town from which to see other nearby attractions, such as a D-Day beach, the Bayeux Tapestry and Mont-St-Michel, all of which I visited. One word of warning - the French railway service isn't the best. The trains are subjected to many cancellations and delays and the ticket machines in the stations frequently refuse to give you a ticket! Railway problems aside, the town of Cherbourg and other parts of Normandy are worth a holiday and I'm so glad I went.Guest review byCLIVEUnited Kingdom - 10.0

In general, the area has many activities. I think you want a day for Mont Saint Michel. You can go hiking, horseback riding, helicopter rides, it's like a zoo. It has many things, I think it took 2-3 days to explore the area.Guest review byJohnGreece - 8.0

Good choice of restaurants & interesting shops. The tourist information was very helpful & staff were friendly. There's lots of walking opportunities from the town & the nearby lighthouse is good to visit. There is a town walking guide available from the tourist information. We arrived by train and took the shuttle bus to the island. From the island it was a bit of a walk (40 mins) with luggage through the fields to reach the hotel. If you're by car/have a bike, this hotel is a good option. If you are - like we were - just walking, it is a bit far to reach the shuttle and restaurants.
