It's a great place, just be care if you are a woman.
It's a great place, just be care if you are a woman. Do NOT go out alone or at night. My housemate and I went to a beach that was 6-7 walking minutes away. It was absolutely lovely. We went at 6pm and left at 8pm. It was dark. Unfortunately 2 masked children (of about 12) tried to "jump" us with knives. I've been traveling for 30 years and robbed 7 times before (including this; that averages out to 1/4 years and I AM VERY WHITE, with blue eyes, blond hair and stand out in certain places, so I may be an "easy target". Still, I've never had knives drawn on me. So PLEASE be careful, especially if you are women. BE SMART. I wasn't. Thankfully all I walked away with was some PTSD and bad memories, but they had masks & REAL KNIVES and it could have been VERY BAD.Guest review byJessicaBelgium - 10.0
Tarrafal by itself is nice to visit for a few days.
Tarrafal by itself is nice to visit for a few days. Beach, good restaurants, you can do hikes on Monte Graciosa, and Tras os Montes. Restaurant 'chez mama' has some hiking maps. And good food too. I spent most of my time fishing. From the rocks at Punta Atum, of from a boat. One thing to keep in mind. Tarrafal in August is hot. You can go up to Serra Malagueta where it is cooler. But rainy in August.Guest review byJanNetherlands - 10.0

Two days in Fogo is way too short - but I booked nine more days in the wonderful hotel Ocean View - and that was a perfect lenght for visiting this VERY interesting island Fogo. But DO NOT react to ANYBODY offering You ANYTHING in the street - I had real bad experience with that - a tourist guide cheated mo for one hundred euro plus a wasted day...Guest review byJenszJenszenDenmark - 10.0

Portela is a magnific place inside a Vulcano crater, i just wanted to stay longer.... you can see the volcano all the time, such magnific view. People are umble and welcome, vilage quiet and great if you travel with kids as they can just go free. There is so much to do if you love geology and treking, such as hile the big vulcano and/or smalers, hike trough lava fillds, explore caves... but also vias ferratas and long trails, you can also go down hiking to mosteiros trough cofe fields (you can arrange it for someone to take yous big bags downs and catch you on the road at the end of the cofe fields to take you to the boat to Praia). The vilage is small and easy to go around, by night there is no much light outside better bring a headlamp. The food is all home made and delicios, we eat in Sonia and Ze house (sweet chiken, beans), Helena (cachupa and omlet) and Isabela (stuwe pig, fish with cream). we had a 4yo and we mostly hiked with him on the backpack, some parts he would go on his foot... things he loved running down the sand hills (big vulcano and small vulcano separated), walk trough the lava fields and sand, draw on sand, play with local kids.Guest review byMónica MotaPortugal - 8.0

Crowded and chaotic city, far from the peaceful atmosphere...
Crowded and chaotic city, far from the peaceful atmosphere found on the other Cape Verde islands. The local population generally doesn’t speak English and often seems offended if you don’t speak to them in Portuguese. Tourists are frequently stared at, which can make you feel a bit out of place, and the overall impression is that visitors aren’t always welcome. We had a bad experience in Praínha, where persistent children came up asking for money, while older men seemed to be eyeing our bags left on the towels. We ended up having to leave immediately by taxi. Outside of the Plateau—the only area recommended for tourists and heavily patrolled by military and police—you don’t really feel safe.Guest review byGrazia PennisiItaly - 10.0

Very cosy little town with nice beach and friendly local people. You can eat very affordable in local bars/restaurants or choose European food in couple of restaurants. The center is quite small, so you walk around easy. Beach is nice and not too much people.Guest review byHeli - 10.0

This location and guest house is not about fluffy pillows nor spa facilities. It's for adventure, it's at the top of a volcano and has limited resources, though with that, the guest house team is VERY accommodating. Meals were delicious, books and games were provided to pass time in the quiet evenings. The surrounding community experience is WONDERFUL. Highly recommend.Guest review byRúbenPortugal - 10.0
