Best stay in Sougia. The apartments are furnished with class (rock and wood), the bed is comfortable and the location is excellent (close to Sougia but in the serenity of the mountains). Go check out the Rebetiko restaurant in Matala, run by the same family. Amazing food!

This is an amazing place in the middle of wonderful nature. The owners are extremely nice and friendly, ready to help any time and to give suggestions, the terrase beautiful and relaxing, the rooms are simple and clean. Reading some of the Google reviews made me a bit nervous about staying here - but really, some of you just need to get out more. At this price point, I challenge you to find a better budget stay anywhere on the island. We actually really liked the "hard" beds as described by a few others - the firm mattresses gave us the best night's sleep in ages, so I guess that's a matter of preference. There may have been one tiny mould stain on the shower tiles, but overall the room was spotless, perfectly spacious for two people, and opened onto an agricultural/mountain view and the tinkling of goat bells. The owner and staff were friendly and helpful, and he happily drove us to the Samaria Gorge starting point in the morning. In a nutshell, this ticks the boxes for a hiking base or overnight stop, and we'd use it again when in the area.
