We (Michael & Brigitte) have both recently retired and together we decided to restore this iconic Geraldine Vicarage building. The Vicarage is classified by Heritage New Zealand as a Category Two protected building and like all major renovations, it has had its challenges, but the unexpected reward has been the hugely positive feedback from the people of Geraldine.
Michael is the fifth generation of Barker's to own land in the Geraldine area but was the first to never farm it. Michael's parents founded a cottage industry called Barker’s Wines in 1969 and developed a range of fruit wines. The Barker’s business grew and now makes a huge range of premium preserves, condiments and drinks. Michael was the Chief Executive of Barker Fruit Processors which is the town’s largest employer. If you look in the fridge in the communal sitting rooms you will hopefully find a jar of jam or sauce, proudly labelled "Barker's of Geraldine"

The Vicarage’s central location finds you right next door to the town’s major visitor attraction, the new Barker’s Foodstore & Eatery which is perched on the Waihi Riverbank overlooking the beautiful Rhododendron gardens which border the Geraldine Sculpture Trail. Walk North along the Waihi River, through rhododendron dells and mature deciduous trees. There are trails on either side of the river and at the North end you can also cross over Talbot Street and immerse yourself in the native bush of Talbot Forest, before wandering back through the centre of town to the Vicarage. In total a one-hour leisurely walk. We highly recommend this walk which traverses our beautiful town and takes in all the interesting shops and galleries and artisan cheese, a gin distillery, and Barker's fruit preserves.
