Cooks Beach is a popular yet peaceful holiday destination, known for its long stretch of soft white sand and sparkling blue water. It’s perfect for swimming, morning walks, or simply soaking up the sun. The beach is not patrolled, so always be mindful of conditions.
To the west lies Shakespeare Cliff, where a short walk rewards you with some of the most breathtaking views in the Coromandel. From there, wander down to the picturesque Lonely Bay, a hidden gem with limestone boulders and pristine white sand – a photographer’s dream.
At the eastern end, the sheltered Purangi Estuary is ideal for boating and fishing. You can even launch your boat from here – just keep an eye on the tides.
Cooks Beach also has a handy convenience store and a selection of great eateries, plus two nearby wineries that are well worth a visit on your way in.
For more adventures, head to Ferry Landing to see Australasia’s oldest stone wharf (built in 1837) and hop on the passenger ferry to Whitianga for shopping, dining, or a day out. A short drive takes you to Hahei, the starting point for the world-famous Cathedral Cove walk (40–45 minutes each way), or you can catch a water taxi from Hahei Beach. Don’t miss Hot Water Beach either – at low tide, dig your own natural spa pool right in the sand.
