Xochimilco is one of the oldest and most charming neighborhoods in Oaxaca City. Walking through its cobblestone streets feels like stepping back in time: colorful colonial houses, stone arches, and its iconic 18th-century aqueduct create a unique atmosphere full of history and tradition.
This neighborhood is known for its peaceful vibe, while still being close to Oaxaca’s most remarkable attractions. Just a short walk away you’ll find the **Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán**, one of Mexico’s most stunning baroque treasures, as well as the **Ethnobotanical Garden**, a magical space showcasing the region’s incredible biodiversity.
Xochimilco is also an excellent starting point to explore Oaxaca’s culinary scene. Nearby you’ll find renowned restaurants such as **Casa Oaxaca**, **Los Danzantes**, and **Criollo**, along with more casual and authentic spots like **La Teca** and **El Quinque**, where you can enjoy both traditional dishes and contemporary creations. For coffee lovers and cozy atmospheres, **Boulenc** and **Café Brújula** are must-visit cafés.
If art and culture are what you’re looking for, the neighborhood connects easily to some of the city’s best museums and galleries, including the **Museum of Oaxacan Cultures** housed in the former Santo Domingo convent, the **Museum of Contemporary Art (MACO)**, and many independent galleries that reflect Oaxaca’s vibrant artistic scene.
Despite being just about a 10-minute walk from the historic center, Xochimilco maintains its authentic and picturesque character. Here you’ll experience the true rhythm of local life: friendly neighbors, artisans working in their workshops, children playing in the streets, and the irresistible aroma of fresh bread from local bakeries.
Staying in Xochimilco means enjoying the very best of Oaxaca—its history, culture, food, and warm people—within a chaming and lively neighborhood that will make your visit unforgettable.
