Johnny Joe's is a small cottage built about 1929 in the centre of Achill Island. It was built next door to a public house which is still open, and a blacksmith's forge which is long gone. In the 1990s it was owned by a retired gentleman who converted the two high ceilinged end rooms by installing a lower ceiling and gallery to the rear of the central living room. Nowadays there are two bedrooms upstairs with living room, kitchenette and sitting room and bathroom/shower downstairs. My wife and I bought it in 2001, and it was used as a temporary home by some of our children as they got married and built their own homes. Now they are all settled and the property has been vacant for the past few months.
The cottage is on the main road through Achill Island and has all of the Island as its doorstep. With open moorland and mountains it is a mecca for hiking, walking, watersports, beaches, fishing and enjoying nature. The main shopping centre is four miles away at Achill Sound, and the principal beaches at Keel, Keem, Dugort , the Valley. Dooega, Dooniver are all within a fifteen minute drive.
You are welcome to come and stay in our basically furnished house, and we will try to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. We like to meet new people from all parts of the world and hope you have a good experience in this oldfashioned house.
On the Wild Atlantic Way, Achill is Ireland's largest Island and has been a visitors' paradise from the mid 1800s. It is an artist's heaven with superb vistas of sea, mountain, and cliffs. Paul Henry, Robert Henri, Alexander Williams, Manie Jellett, and dozens of other artists have come and worked here over the years. It is still the home of Camille Souter, Ireland's most famous living artist. Learn about marine life in the local aquarium, enjoy the scenery, catch a fish from one of the beaches or rocky shores, eat at one of the many resaturants, take a boat trip to Clare Island or Innishbiggle, cycle along the quieter roads or on the Greenway. Come for Scoil Acla and learn to play a traditional instrument or come for the Harp Festival for a special few days. Get away from the hustle of the city and towns and venture out over the open deserted bogs and hills, with of course, and eye to the weather and safety. Come and enjoy!!
