The town of Stamford is steeped in history and the streets are often used for filming period dramas and films. Visit 'The George Hotel' an old Coaching Inn believed to date back to 947AD across the road outside is the gallows sign which welcomed the honest traveller and was a warning to highwaymen , 40 coach and horses travelled through Stamford daily and stopped to refresh on the journey from London to York a which took 4 days, the fare was 25 shillings inside the stagecoach and 18 shillings outside.
The town has many 17th & 18th-century stone buildings, older timber framed buildings and many churches five of which are medieval.
There are many independently owned shops and restaurants which are well worth a visit.
