The North York Moors Steam Railway regularly passes through the village train station and there is a fabulous walk into neighbouring Whitby shadowing the train tracks through Briggswath and Ruswarp making it a lovely route. The River Esk is the only river in Yorkshire inhabited by salmon and there is an actual salmon leap where at the right time of year you will see them jumping up the ledge in the water and heading to their breeding ground. Briggswath has a fabulous boating lake and café as well as an 18-hole putting green. The fascinating town of Whitby is where the River Esk meets the sea and is famous for its gothic links to Bram Stoker’s Dracula. There are many events and festivals all year round such as the bi-annual Goth Weekender, a regatta and many more.
