All around Axat there are forest paths offering easy walking with lovely views. Opportunities for more strenuous walkingabound in the surrounding hills. Many footpaths around the village. Following the river in the directions Mijanes, you will find the spectacular valley “Gorges de St. Georges”. Doing the walk it is possible to drink fresh spring water from the local spring. Cathar Castleruins are scattered throughout the area - usually perched on impossibly craggy and steep outcrops. There are many to visit and all are awe-inspiring. For medieval castle-baggers, there is the castle of Puilaurens just outside Lapradelle village 5 km from Axat. Also castles at Queribus, Peyrepertuse, Puivert, Foix and many others in the Corbières hills. Carcassonne is an historic city it is the second most visited place in France. It stands magnificent on its hill 150 meters above the river Aude. Restored in the last century, it is a dream of the perfect medieval city.
