This town celebrates its Roman past, nestling in fields of wheat and sunflowers alongside the River Charente as it makes its way West from the interior to La Rochelle, twisting and curving through the winelands. The River Charente boasts a beach/waterfront where swimming and hired canoes are available during the summer season. Gazelle Guest house and Art Gallery is opposite the Town Hall, on the Market Square and two doors away from the Tourist Bureau. Within the town centre there are restaurants, bars, pharmacies, banks and hairdressers. Market days are Wednesday and Saturday mornings, with the fresh fish indoor market on Fridays. These take place in the main square. A longer walk through the tree-lined promenade will bring you to another supermarket, hardware store, shoes, clothing and decorative arts. Walking in the opposite direction to town will bring you onto a meadowed plateau with far- reaching views of the countryside, where you can stretch your legs for many miles or ride your bicycle.
