Neighbourhood information

Located at 1,326 meters above sea level, at the confluence of five valleys, Briançon is the highest city in France. This city of art and history, fortified by Vauban in the 18th century, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Briançon has a remarkable ensemble of military works, built from the 18th to 20th centuries in order to improve the city’s defence system. During the visit, visitors can discover the high town or citadel of Vauban, the very heart of Briançon, dominated by the castle fort and the various surrounding structures such as the fort des Salettes, the fort des Trois Têtes and the fort du Randouillet. Once you have passed the Pignerol gate, the picturesque old town reveals to its visitors many testimonies of its past. The collegiate church of Notre-Dame from the 18th century, the 14th century Cordeliers' church, the old houses rising on either side of the sloping streets, the charming place d'Armes surrounded by pretty colourful facades evoking Provence, or the fountains and sundials, are as many discoveries that offer the view of lovers of architecture. In winter, Briançon becomes a popular destination for ski enthusiasts, with its ski area part of the famous resort of Serre-Chevalier.
