Recommend booking the private Onsen and visiting the Sake bar. This property is very easy to access from Tokyo via Shinkansen to Nagano and then local train (200m walk to hotel). There are plenty of transport options within town to visit snow monkeys and lots of great dining options.

Located in a forest, Tokonamiso offers a nature retreat with Japanese-style rooms, barbecue facilities and free WiFi access in the lobby area. Staff were wonderful and helpful. The facility was very clean and comfortable. Stayed in the the annex, which I heard just opened last month. It was just across the street. The tea offered added an authentic experience. It was 12 minutes walking distance to the train station, although they still offered shuttle services.

Loved the traditional ryokan style and incredible onsen. The meals were delicious and all served in private dining rooms - Japanese style. Lovely staff.
