Set inside the Matera Sassi area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Palazzo Degli Abati offers unique rooms carved in the rock or in a 18th-century building. Stayed in a cave room with shell fossils in the cave walls; it was a well lit cave but with all the comforts of home including shower, air conditioning, TV, and we were lucky in that we had no stairs to take to our room. Also there is a lift that can take you up to the upper level restaurant, Crialòss, that has a panoramic view of Matera. Also very much appreciated the welcome drink. Having a prosecco with the spectacular view that is Matera on a sunny day on a patio is one of the best memories I have. Staff were also incredibly communicative prior to my stay and were able to help arrange for guarded parking and a shuttle into Matera so that was zero stress.

Overlooking Matera’s Sasso Barisano, Fra I Sassi Residence is set in restored 17th-century buildings inside the Matera Sassi UNESCO site area. Fantastic place with nice rooms and a beautiful view of the old city. Very central and close to everything. The breakfast was so delicious with a great selection of local specialties. The staff were all very friendly. Would definitely recommend!
