Loved the Bell tents, well laid out. Warm and cozy. Comfortable. Not to far from the main building, but far enough away to have good privacy. A great overall layout on the property. Loved and appreciated the foot onsen after a day of hiking Nakasendo. We ordered dinner, and breakfast and both were yummy and very generous sizes.

The host was super friendly and our room was really large with comfortable beds and a projector to watch Netflix. For breakfast, it was possible to make some eggs. The house looked was traditional Japanese which was really nice.

We stayed for two nights so we could hike the Nakasendo Trail (Magome to Tsumago); allowing additional time to travel there and then time to relax before heading off. It seems a bit out of the way on the map, but that's exactly what we loved about the experience. Sakashita is in the mountains, is very quiet and non-touristy. If you love getting away from the hustle and bustle of the larger cities, then this will fit the bill. The host was wonderful; he drove us to the trailhead (10 minutes) and gave clear instructions how to return, via a short bus and train ride. We were given dinner recommendations and chose Shuku Rin. Good choice. The host there was fantastic; she wasn't open until 6pm, but opened early as she saw us outside, most likely looking a bit sad and lost. This was a shared home, with a shared kitchen, sitting rooms, toilet and shower. We consider ourselves fortunate that we had the house to ourselves. An absolute must; stop at the restaurant partway on the trail and have Goehi Mochi (toasted rice balls on sticks, with warm sesame and walnut soy sauce.) What I would do to have one now... Our regret? Not having one (or two) orders each.

It's a stellar place to rest after doing the Nakasendo Trail. The staff are beyond helpful and every part of the hotel experience speaks to peace and relaxation. You should try all the baths as they are all interesting in their own way. Word to the wise, maybe don't book the private mountain baths when the temperature is at 2 degrees and it's 10pm. You will freeze your butt off on the way up, not to mention walking there on wooden slippers feels like its own physical test. The kaiseki experience for dinner showcases the best of the local vegetation and it was fun to have craft alcohol as well. We only wish we could order more of what we wanted ala carte. I'd tell someone, even if you aren't doing the nakasendo trail, it will be fun to make your way to this hotel.

it was great to stay right on the Old Nakasendo Way, in an authentic traditional house. It was an easy walk to the Suhara train station, supermarket and restaurants. We took a train and bus to Magome-juku one day and walked via Magome Pass to Tsumago-juku - which was an absolute highlight of our 3 weeks in Japan.
