Verbania is a really good base for a stay on Lake Maggiore.
Verbania is a really good base for a stay on Lake Maggiore. It has 2 parts - Intra where the main ports are, and Pallanza. There are lots of boats leaving and arriving every day at Intra, both passenger-only and ferries with cars, so very useful for exploring other parts of the lake. Intra has a nice sea front and an old town with little courtyards and cafes dotted all over it. The highlight of Pallanza is Villa Taranto, the botanic gardens. We had a room on the first floor with a balcony which maximises the view. The bed was top quality, with cotton sheets; the bathroom provided everything you could need; and the breakfasts were superb, with everything from muesli, fresh fruit and yoghurt to more standard cooked.
