FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

There is so much to do in York!

There is so much to do in York! We were there for a wedding in the museum gardens but managed to do some walking around town! Some great places we ate: Fat Hippo - delish burgers and different fries (don't get the fried pickles unless you like them soggy!) Bettys tea rooms - for afternoon tea but we also had breakfast - scrambled egg bacon and english muffin sooo filling and cooked to perfection! We also went into a few of the pubs/bars in this area and they were all great fun some of which had live music I would love to return and do some of the history and ghost tours!

For the amount of people in this city and tourism alike the people behind the place keep it very clean 10 out of 10 .the biggest let down for the tourism is the lack of loos when you put on a big show it would make sense to even have people pay for a nip to a porta loo so they don't feel to mutch discomfort on there stay the boat trips are good value and so is the bus service

Please make plans of what you want to see as it is easier to book venues and you can plan your trip and use time wisely. York is a wonderful place for food, drink and variety. This trip I went on my own for the first time after visiting York many years with my husband, Since his death I wasn't sure if I could do this alone but I did and it was wonderful. I have limited mobility and use a stick but there are plenty of areas to sit and rest. York is so easy to get around - if you can get to York by train I suggest you do so as you really don't need a car. You can hop on and off the tour bus- recommended. The taxi drivers in York are so helpful and friendly. All cafe's and restaurants make you welcome and want to help you. I've never been anywhere in York where people are not helpful. I love the place and now I know I can manage alone I will be back very soon. I recommend the Hilton on Tower Road - very central and staff are amazing.

Loved the Christmas shop and the bear shop.

Loved the Christmas shop and the bear shop. Fabulous Harry Shop that "can't be named" in the Shambles. Didn't see much of the minster as covered with scaffolding outside and £20 each to enter which was too expensive for the short amount of time we had available.

An amazing stay here. The staff are wonderful always on hand with a genuine warm smile and greeting to help your stay be special. The breakfast offer was delicious which sets you up for the day. Rooms are immaculate with an expresso coffee machine. A few hundred metres away from the hotel is York race course where you can walk around and then drop into York City Centre, around a 50 mins walk. A first class stay, unreservedly recommended and will be staying again.

Fantastic location in the centre of York literally next to the Minster and Shambles. Public parking nearby at Q-Park was great quality with a hefty discount code from the hotel. Room was spacious and well equipped, staff were super friendly and the breakfast was incredible. Can also recommend eating an evening meal at the Forest restaurant it was excellent and reasonably priced for a city centre too.

Lovely period hotel with a great back story in beautiful setting close to the City Centre. Reception Staff very welcoming. Free upgrade (noticed and thank you). Very comfortable stay - always choose this hotel first when coming to York (prices noticeably vary so also depends on that). Parking on site, but you can park on the busy road outside too for free.
