Surprisingly not an apocalyptic post-industrial wasteland... the football fans and the people generally are some of the friendliest I have met in my travels around the UK. Ended up walking back across the city to my hotel as the taxis were all busy, quite enjoyed it - even heard owls somewhere down by the river. I had to visit family at short notice and the hotel is very convenient for where they live in Sunderland. The facilities are good and the staff were great.
