    We stayed in Carisbrooke, a bus ride to the centre of Newport, which is a great base for buses to all parts of the island. Loads of pubs and eateries to choose from, and all the shops you could wish for. We are keen walkers, and there are some lovely routes around Newport.

    Ideal location for exploring the Island. The variety of good real ale pubs and eating places were a lot less than when I was first in Newport around 15 or so years ago. We tried several pubs, and a tea room/bakery, but on balance the best were not in Newport. The best for drinks - beer at least and wine - was the Newport Ale House; and for food and drink, the Union Inn Cowes, the Red Lion Freshwater, the Bargeman's Rest Newport, the Castle Inn Newport, and top of the list the Highdown Inn Totland Bay ... but there are more to try when we next go for a week of exploration and hiking!

    excellent place to visit all parts of the Island as the bus...

    excellent place to visit all parts of the Island as the bus service seems to visit everywhere. Only had two days but we were able to visit the Needles, Carisbrooke Castle, the Wild Life Sanctuary and Osborne House.

    We wanted to visit all parts of the island so its central location with a variety of pubs and restaurants was ideal. However, it’s not the prettiest place on the Isle of Wight and the traffic at rush hour was heavy and compounded by roadworks.

    Not the most exciting town but a great centre for visiting...

    Not the most exciting town but a great centre for visiting the isle of wight by bus as most routes start and finish there and the buses are reliable - I used it as a base for walking the first half of the coastal path. It also has a reasonable choice of eating places

    The town itself was not inspiring.

    The town itself was not inspiring. WE only spent a short time in town. WE stayed a few miles ouside and the surrounding countryside was very nice. Good location to explore the island - although the size of the IoW means any base is never far from anywhere!

    Friendly host very kindly gave us a lift from the ferry as we had decided to explore the island by bus. It is an interesting converted historic warehouse building, ideal for visiting Newport and the island. Lovely relaxing view from the lounge balcony overlooking the tidal old quayside, birdlife and the Arts centre. Only minutes walk to good pubs, restaurants, shops, bus station and supermarkets. Very comfortable rooms and we liked the decor and feeling. A unique stay.

    Close to where I needed to be for work so the location was perfect. The room is perfect for a business traveller looking for somewhere reasonably priced and close to Newport. The pub below had folk night that evening which was very entertaining and I had an evening meal there too which was great. I’ll be going back I’m sure.

    Newport is a central location for getting round the isle and the wheatsheaf is in the centre of Newport but the town is grotty and staying at the wheatsheaf involves witnessing lots of anti-social behaviour on the streets outside throughout the night
