Lovely little village with a charming array of small shops, gift shops, cafes and pubs and free parking. We also visited the Kirkby Stephen East railway station which runs steam and diesel trains regularly during the summer months and is run entirely with volunteers who couldn’t have been more helpful - an ideal place to visit for any railway enthusiasts. There is also a gift shop and ‘buffet car’. We tried ‘The White Hare’ cafe which is on the Main Street in the village and is dog friendly. Staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and the menu was well priced with a good and varied selection. We both had hot drinks and a Ploughman’s lunch (4 different variations to choose from) for £7.50 and they were lovely. The dog was given treats too. Would definitely pay another visit.

Kirkby Stephen is a very attractive town on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. It has a couple of pubs with rooms, a handful of B&Bs, a couple of pubs without accommodation and a number of cafes. There is also a selection of local shops, some selling gifts, cards and momentos. The only places which serve food after 8.00 pm are the Indian and Chinese restaurants and the take away which sells pizzas, kebabs, etc. We ate in the Chinese restaurant which was very good - it looks like a takeaway from outside but does have a restaurant hidden away upstairs. The countryside around the town is gorgeous and there are a number of lovely walks in the surrounding areas, some of which are suitable for those (like me) who are not dedicated walkers.

Walks and cycle rides in every direction (roads not too frightening); both sides of Mallerstang worth walking as well as the valley (Garsdale rail station at far end); near Pennine Bridleway, on C2C I think; historic with the viaducts, Settle and Carlisle Railway

Owner responded immediately when needed. Very clean. Small but was expected from photos. Shower excellent. Room very cool and welcome in this weekends heat. Extremely quiet, which I did not expect as it was so close to High Street. Good nights sleep, bed and pillows comfy. Tea and coffee and biscuits a welcome addition. Had a great meal at the Chinese across the road, both cafes on high street good. Black Bull food ok but very quiet for a Saturday evening. Pennine Inn had a better atmosphere. Extremely friendly locals.

We loved our room on the top floor, really tastefully decorated, and with an excellent and specious bathroom, with lots of hot water. We had a great view of the Market Place from our window and were delighted to see the 'Forties Weekend' going on outside. We also bought some 'War-time Marmalade' (made from carrots). Exceptional was the kind welcome we received from very hard-working staff. Kirkby Stephen is set in a beautiful landscape and we shall certainly seek it out again and hope to stay at The Pennine Inn.

Friendly bar staff and helpful when checking into the rooms. The hotel is a historic building so has lovely features, winding stairs and unusual features to rooms. Not modern and square. The twin room we had was freshly decorated, very spacious, and had the most comfortable beds with fresh white linen. Coffee tea and biscuits of a good quality ready to welcome you. I liked it was quiet and so clean and fresh.
