An incredibly welcoming and warm hearted place, with an exceptional quality of care from the staff. The rooms, the restaurant, the bar and the common areas are first class. I absolutely loved staying here, but it won’t be for everyone. This former stately home is only half renovated with large areas still to be finished. I was a bit concerned before checking in about other reviews saying it wasn’t very clean but our room was spotless with a huge roll too bath and marble floors. The beds were soooo comfy. Some other comunal areas were a little tired so perhaps they could be cleaner but they are the rooms that are awaiting renovation and it’s more wear than dirt that’s the problem. Despite some small niggles Islay House has so much history and the building itself is stunning. Perfectly situated, quiet, peaceful and great views. Ali the main ‘concierge’ (if you can call him that as it’s really more of a b&b) was affable and helpful always, even showing me the buildings plans because I was asking about the closed off areas. If I ever go back to Islay I will 100% stay there again. The breakfast absolutely slapped, by far the best we had anywhere on our trip.

The youth hostel is in a great location, right on a beach. Karl and Lorna were lovely and welcoming and provided some information on local cycling too which was great. There was nothing at all negative I could say.

The location is so central to Port Ellen and the ferry terminal. The staff were friendly and polite, and all my emails prior to and during our stay were answered promptly. Our room was upgraded when they saw we were staying for several nights, which was unexpected but very much appreciated. The cafe right next door was very handy for drinks and snacks - the cakes were delicious! Other food offerings in town were within a 5-min walk. Above all, the bay views and gorgeous hills all around gave us beautiful memories of our stay!

    BOWMORE is a good town to make it your base "camp" to go...

    BOWMORE is a good town to make it your base "camp" to go around to visit the distilleries. It meets your basic needs for restaurants, grocery store, pharmacy, post office and a place to get gas. The people were friendly and helpful. For us during our time period for the visit, there was a big street repaving project going on which made the streets very rough to drive on - I believe that this improvement should be finished now. We enjoyed our visit here. The one piece of advice that I would make - is to make reservations for dinner at any place you want to eat at.

    Bowmore is a central place on which to base your stay. Great facilites and choice of places to eat and stay. Good transport links. The secenery is lovey, especially views over the loch. The locals are friendly and welcoming.

    Bowmore is a small but very pretty town/ village right on...

    Bowmore is a small but very pretty town/ village right on the loch shore - originating as a "planned village" from the late 1700s (go to the Islay museum in Port Charlotte to find out more). It has a whisky distillery of course which sadly was not running tours when we visited, due to covid. It has a couple of small shops that are great for books and presents, cafes, and a very unusual round church.

    Bowmore seemed like the best place to stay on Islay as it...

    Bowmore seemed like the best place to stay on Islay as it was within an easy drive of all sights, distilleries and the ferry ports. There was also a reasonable array of shops, including a supermarket. We were lucky with fine weather throughout but could have done with a couple of extra days.
