The Glory of the Roman Empire
With arguably the most impressive Roman heritage outside Rome, Nîmes is truly a sight to behold. Its most awe-inspiring structure is the virtually intact Roman amphitheatre. The gladiators are long gone, but a matador statue outside gives an idea of its current use, which is most celebrated during the annual Feria.
Another amazing Roman monument is the Maison Carrée, a colonnaded temple. The Temple of Diana is less well preserved, but still maintains some of its arched roof and interior details. The peaceful, surrounding Fontaine Gardens cover the grounds of the former Roman baths and still contain elegant water features.
Also water-related is the incredible Pont du Gard, a triple-arched Roman aqueduct across a river north-east of Nîmes. Other Roman remains include the Tour Magne, and 2 gates that allowed access through the city walls.
The Nîmes Archaeological Museum in the former Jesuit college provides background to this history and also houses the Warrior of Grezan, a pre-Roman statue. Another museum houses a fine art collection, and the simple cathedral is also worth visiting.
In addition to plenty of restaurants and bars, Nîmes has a good range of accommodation. Booking.com’s options include luxury hotels by Parc Expo Nimes, and cheap apartments near the train station, all easily accessible from Nîmes-Alès-Camargue-Cévennes Airport.

Paradoxically I wasn't able to extend my stay because of the Feria - a giant oarty involvingvthe whole city and booking out all but the most expensive rooms. Nîmes is a beautiful and calm city, perfect for a break from big‑city life. We stayed near the Nîmes Arena, which made it easy to walk around and explore the city. There are plenty of restaurants, cafés and places to enjoy great wines. Just be aware that many places close in the middle of the day, around 3 pm, and reopen at around 7 pm – but that’s a great time to head back to your hotel and rest before going out for a nice dinner. I’d definitely recommend Les Jolis Canons for its great wine selection, Gard O Vin for excellent wines and appetisers, Cali Kitchen for breakfast or brunch, and Léone for an amazing dinner.Guest review byTaiene LisottiIreland - 10.0

A compact town with thoughtful and well presented public spaces. A visit to the 3 Roman monuments, with exceptional conservation, and museum is a must (one €20 combined entry makes a pleasant day). The Vieux Nîmes museum has an interesting collection, with a focus on denim, and the Beaux Arts gallery is a good size. The modern art gallery we skipped, except for its rooftop restaurant overlooking the Maison Carrè, Nice lunch and an unforgettable location. Nîmes is a lively, working city, with an engaging atmosphere - we saw evening markets on Thursdays and dancing in Place d'Assas on Fridays. Concerts take place in the Roman amphitheatre. Nimes is a beautiful charming town with a wonderful modern museum on Roman history. There are several other worthwhile museums. Walking around the town is beautiful with wide tree lined streets and fountains and the exceptional Roman arena and Temple plus the Gardens. Lovely restaurants with outdoor seating. There is great parking at Indingo underground parking and if you are lucky on the street. There are some nice shops. The coach from the airport coincides with the arrival times of.the flights so easy to get on to get to Nimes centre or other places. Breakfast was really good in the hotel. There is a coffee machine and water and juice machine for use by guests on tap all day. The room is soundproof and has air conditioning. Windows can be opened if you prefer.
