FAQs about hotels in Bayeux

Rich History and Medieval Beauty

Bayeux is a medieval French town in the region of Lower Normandy, known for the 11th-century Bayeux Tapestry which depicts scenes from the conquest of England by William the Conquerer in 1066. Registered by UNESCO as ‘Memory of the World’, this historic tapestry is 70 metres long and gives us information about the way of life in the Middle Ages.

The Norman-Romanesque Notre Dame Cathedral has impressive stained glass windows, bas-relief sculptures and a crypt with 15th-century frescoes beneath its floor. Consecrated in 1077, this structure is the place where the Bayeux Tapestry was kept for about seven centuries.

Opened in 1864, the botanical garden of Bayeux, which is home to the popular Weeping Beech tree and about 400 more trees, is open daily for free. You can wander around the picturesque old part of the city or visit the vibrant city centre with the modern shops and restaurants.

Crossed by the Aure River and situated on the train route to Paris, Bayeux is 7 km from the coast of the English Channel and 20 km from Caen – Carpiquet Airport. Booking.com will help you find the right hotel, guest house or apartment in Bayeux and the city of Caen.

Beautiful town, great location to take a trip to Normandy beaches. The tapestries were moved to the UK and the Tapestry museum closed on Sept 1st for two years! Most restaurants were closed on Sunday and Monday and you definitely need a reservation for dinner if you want a good meal. some restaurants were closed on Tuesday too! If you take a full day tour of Normandy I would suggest staying the night at Bayeux because there is traffic at the end of the day heading back to Paris.

Bayeux is a lovely, well-maintained, safe and easily walkable town. We used it as a base for three full-day tours to the Normandy beaches and Mont Saint-Michel, so we only had time to explore the Cathedral on our own. Unfortunately, the Bayeux Tapestry had been temporarily removed by the time we arrived, so we did not get to visit that. It is advisable to make restaurant reservations if there are ones you do not want to miss, but seeing the sites was more of our priority. We were willing to eat around 6:30 or 7:00 and we did not have any problem finding a satisfactory meal.

Bayeux is a small town, but is centrally located to get to Mont St Michael and D-Day activities. Not much to do in the town itself. There was one highlight in the town itself and that was the restaurant La Rapiere. We had a great dining experience there.

Upon entering Bayeux we were stunned by the beauty of the Cathedral. The town itself was lovely and we enjoyed the markets. We were sad not to be able to see the Bayeux tapestry as it was being restored. No worries, we will just return in two years time. Of course, WWII had a huge impact on Normandy and Bayeux. We visited the landing beaches easily from Bayeux and the war museum at Bayeux is not to be missed. The largest second world war cemetery is to be found in Bayeux also.

Bayeux is a 35 min taxi ride from the ferry in Ouistraham (which is Caen on their schedule). There are busses to nearby sites (Arromanches), but usually once per day is your option. You spend a lot more time relying on the bus, but taxis are very expensive and not plentiful. I loved the town of Bayeux itself-very quaint, and walkable. I found the Tourist Information center to be extremely helpful and they speak great English. She helped me with getting the bus, where to go, and how to pay (you need 2 Euros in cash-there is no cards on the bus).

Staying where we did made easy walking access to the main area for restaurants and shopping. We walked to meet our tour and did the Tapestry museum. We should have stayed longer to enjoy a few more museums and the city vibe.

Easy access hotel with car parking. Very friendly and helpful staff, good size and comfortable rooms. The hotel is about 15 -20 minute walk to the city centre, so easy to see the Cathedral, Tapestry and beautiful city. The Museum is reasonably close too. From Bayeux it is about 20-30 minutes drive to Caen and the Normandy beaches for further sightseeing.

Location is fantastic for exploring Bayeux itself and the Normandy beaches etc. Nice staff, everything clean and quite modern. Good restaurant on site, with reasonably priced good breakfast available. Free parking is about an 8 minute walk away, but this was not a problem. View from the bedroom window is attached showing the excellent location.

On arrival we were able to find free parking opposite the hotel. The receptionist was very friendly and gave us some advice for things to do that we hadn’t planned for. The room was very comfortable and the location was perfect for visiting the sites and access to the town centre.
