This is an old town in former east Germany. It was a key port on the Hanseatic League. The Hanseatic League,[a] commonly called The Hansa, was a medieval commercial and defensive network of merchant guilds and market towns in Central and Northern Europe. Growing from Lübeck and a few other North German towns in the late 12th century, the League expanded between the 13th and 15th centuries and ultimately encompassed nearly 200 settlements across eight modern-day countries, ranging from what is now Estonia in the northeast to the Netherlands in the west, and extended inland as far south as Cologne, and Kraków, Poland. One more comment about the Altstadt apartment: check-in is not allowed until 4p.m. And you don't find that out til after you have paid. We had to while away an hour in a coffee shop, surrounded by our suitcases, as we had already arranged to arrive about 3, which has been the latest check-in time everywhere we've stayed before.Guest review byRobertUnited States - 10.0

Fantastic town to visit, wonderful buildings and architecture, Beautiful and compact sea port with harbour tours and an amazing fish restaurant. Plenty of good restaurants but would highly recommend the restaurant 'Alte Schwede' in the market square. Several very large church buildings with amazing architecture. Enjoyed the harbour and the large cathedral. Loved all the little shops and the seagulls. My daughter and granddaughter took the harbour trip. As I am unsteady on my feet I found the round cobblestones annoying but nearby was always a flat stone way. Also enjoyed the conversation with a gentleman at the tiny museum who was a member of the gang who played in Soko Wismar....a favorite of mine.Guest review byPatricia - 10.0

Experience brick Gothic cathedrals & old houses with nearby harbor & fresh fish. Don't miss the Maritime heritage centre at Alter Hafen (Old Harbor) - excellent English/German explanations of Hanseatic League, & ship form "cog". Wismar has the spirit of a patchwork city.
Wismar has the spirit of a patchwork city. You see the rich history of the city reflected in its buildings. You definitely need to go to the Schabbelhaus Museum to know more about it. There are plenty of places to go to eat. In my experience, there are a lot of nice places in the harbor, but I still miss some in downtown. Definitely a place to visit!Guest review byJorgeGermany
