Hohenschwangau is a very busy and very touristy place, especially in summer but you can still enjoy the area and visit the castles if you plan things a little. Firstly, I strongly suggest you book your tickets in advance as you must visit the castles at an appointed time. Secondly, in spite of the fact that you only have barely half an hour inside Neuschwanstein Castle and 45 minutes at Hohenschwangau Castle, the lead up times (how long it takes to get there from Hohenschwangau village, and then how far in advance you need to be at the Castle gates), you will find that you will probably take close to an entire day to visit both Castles! Allow at least 3 hours for Neuschwanstein (queue for the bus, walk to Marienbrucke for a spectacular view, be at the Castle entrance at least 15 minutes before entry, 30 minutes for the tour, another 30-40 minutes for the walk downhill), and at least 2-3hrs for Hohenschwangau Castle). While you cannot plan the weather, obviously for the best views over the lakes and the countryside will be in sunshine, but there's no reason you cannot enjoy the castles even in rain or snow, however transportation may be limited in some weather. It's a long slog up the hill to walk to Neuschwanstein (not so bad for Hohenschwangau) so recommend spending the EUR 3.50 per person to take the bus (pretty scary windy drive!) or splurge and take the horse drawn carriage! It's a nice walk down from both castles. Lots of places to stop for a snack or a meal in Hohenschwangau but of course at tourist prices!Guest review byRobinAustralia - 10.0

The hotel is perfectly situated only minutes from the local town but in a peaceful setting with incredible views. Highly recommended if you are looking for a peaceful retreat with the added advantage of so many things to do. Good location for visiting the castles.
Good location for visiting the castles. I would imagine it gets very busy in full swing summer. We were there in the week before so out of the main time. The parking for either or both of the castles was a tad expensive but not "Get another Mortgage" expensive. The hotel two thirds of the way up the hill after getting off the horse/buggy up to Neuschwanstein was a welcome and pleasant stay, both going up and coming down, from the castle.Guest review byRobertUnited Kingdom - 10.0
The place is as touristy as you might expect but really...
The place is as touristy as you might expect but really worth the visit. We did the 2 castles in one day and were exhausted at the end of it. Places to eat was a bit hit and miss - our hotel was b&b only but we took some food from the supermarket on the second day and ate on the balcony in the sunshine. We did the audio tour of the castles - it was informative - I couldn't remember half of it after we left - but the rooms are opulent and you get his vision in building and decorating. It's all very efficient. If you are really interested then I suggest reading up on German fairy tales. When you book a castle tour you can't go in until the exact time - so don't be late or too early. However it does take quite a while to actually get to the entrance. We took the free bus from town and then paid for the shuttle bus upto the castle. The shuttle packs you in which wasn't very nice. Think London tube at rush hour! I think tours were about 40 minutes long in each castle - lastly there are loads of stairs in the castles so be warned...Guest review bysamanthaUnited Kingdom - 8.0
We enjoyed walking in the area.
We enjoyed walking in the area. I could have stayed longer and walked more and also I would have liked to do some cycling which is clearly something you can do. For anyone of a certain age that remembers the Steve Mcqueen motorbike sequence from The Great Escape, this is that country. That and fairy tale castles. It is a tourist area but nevertheless prices in bars and restaurants seemed reasonable to me there's a lot of farming going on in the area too so it's not a total theme park.Guest review byAndrewUnited Kingdom - 8.0

The views were spectacular when the weather was clear. This is the second time that we have visited and bad weather has prevented us from getting to use the bridge and trails due to snow and ice closures each time. You can easily get into the apartment, the keys can be retrieved from the box nearby the building entry door regardless of the arrival hour. The apartment is a good choice for a short stay, however it lacks some furnishings to suit longer stays. The location is really good, you can walk to the castle or the old town in 20 mins. There is also a bus stop nearby, you can take free bus with your guest card. Artur is really kind, he picked us up at the Füssen station. He introduced the facilities in great details and recommended us good restaurants.
