FAQs about hotels in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The Peak of German Skiing

At the foot of Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is one of the country’s top ski resorts. The Bavarian style of its Alpine chalets includes beautiful flowers lining every balcony, and colourful frescoes adorning the outsides of houses.

The varied skiing and snowboarding in the surrounding Alps is based mainly on blue and red runs. To ski on the Zugspitze glacier you take a train up to the mountain then a cable car down to the slopes. The summit itself offers magnificent views of the valleys below, provided you’re lucky enough to get a break in the clouds.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a former host of the Winter Olympics and the World Alpine Ski Championships. It also has a ski jump that forms part of the world cup of that sport. In summer hiking is the most popular activity and a lengthy route leads up to King’s House on Schachen, a supposed castle that looks more like a house.

It was built for Ludwig II, the eccentric king behind the region’s most impressive castle – Neuschwanstein to the north-west of Garmisch. The road between them passes by Oberammergau, famous for its 10-yearly Passion Plays.

Accommodation in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on Booking.com includes 4-star hotels near the train station, traditional guest houses near Partnach Gorge, and cheap apartments with parking.

Physically - GaPa is super easy to walk around.

Physically - GaPa is super easy to walk around. Mainly the walking is on flat, well maintained sidewalks. Also, If you like hiking up mountains there are plenty of trails to spend days exploring (weeks maybe?) We especially loved the mountain top restaurants. Spiritually - The Catholic Church's here (Like all over Europe) are beautiful and steeped in history. The crowds (tourists) were respectful and maintained a quiet demeanor as they walked around the church. But, for those serious about their Catholic Faith there is plenty of time in the church without crowds to spend in prayer, silence and contemplation with Jesus. Mentally - GaPa is a great place to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. The people are friendly. The mountains are picture perfect. This place has got to be on your Bucket-list.

Beautiful village, access to Zugspitze, Partnach Gorge,...

Beautiful village, access to Zugspitze, Partnach Gorge, great olde world charm, stunning views, fresh air, great place to holiday and relax. Free buses to get around, great Asian food just around the corner, probably 100 metres and reasonably priced. Great trip to Lindenhof palace and gardens, Zugspitze, Partnach Gorge and Mittenwald Cow Parade, the highlight of my stay in Garmisch Partenkirchen.

We visited GAP 37 years ago so some things have changed quite a bit. It now has quite a variety of places to eat - Italian, Asian, Pizza on every corner and an international crowd of tourists. We really had to search to find traditional German food and when we did it was mediocre. Many restaurants do not open until 5pm. If they are open for lunch, it's usually from 11:30-2:00 so keep track of the time. Highly recommend reservations if you want to eat dinner between 5:30-8:30pm. We were there in September. It was sunny and it was hot. Most hotels and restaurants do not have air conditioning. Depending on your time, consider taking the cog train from town to The Zugspit and then the cable car down. Go on a clear, good weather day otherwise you will waste a lot of money. If you are in decent shape, consider the hike at the Partnachklamm Gorge..bring a flashlight and a light rain jacket. Of course if it's a hot day, you will welcome the cool water spray. Eibsee is a beautiful, clean lake with a small beach and hiking paths. One thing that hasn't change is the heavy, stop & go traffic getting to G-P. Allow at least an additional hour driving than what you were planning.

The highlight was of course the Zugspite and the journey there by train, rack-rail, and cable car. Amazing views from the Zugspitze plateau topped only by the panorama from the peak itself. Given more time we'd have explored the many hiking trails, including the Partnach Gorge, but did manage the short walk to the beautiful pilgrimage church of Wallfahrtskirche St. Anton, not far from our hotel in downtown Partenkirchen.

I thought the White Night Party was an abomination.

I thought the White Night Party was an abomination. I had visited for the Richard Strauss festival whose last night was bizarrely paired with the noisiest and town dominating party I ever experienced. This meant the concert hall was entirely beseiged by very noisy bands and revellers dressed in white. Utterly bizarre. Had I known I would not have visited.

    Garmisch is pure magic.

Garmisch is pure magic. We absolutely loved the fresh mountain air — it instantly lifts your spirits and clears your mind. The towering Alps surrounding the town are breathtaking, offering postcard-perfect views from every angle. Whether you're hiking, strolling through the charming streets, or just relaxing at a café, the atmosphere is peaceful and invigorating all at once. The blend of nature, fresh air, and traditional Bavarian charm makes it the perfect escape. Even just a few days here felt like a reset. Friendly locals, cozy spots to eat, and endless outdoor activities make it a destination we’d return to in a heartbeat. Garmisch has a special kind of energy; calm, welcoming, and wonderfully refreshing.

Everything. Every single moment of it, the city provided experiences I will carry with me for a lifetime and Gasthof was one of the reasons that made such adventure possible. What else can I say? There’s something timeless about Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and your place captures that spirit perfectly. From the charm of the building to the warmth of the welcome, everything felt authentic, grounded, and effortlessly cool. It was the kind of experience that stays with you. Danke Schön and until next time. Felipe Sampaio Castanheira

Super location, very quiet, and great top floor apartment with wonderful mountain views. This was perfect for myself and two friends, with plenty of space (two bedrooms, and the sofa-bed). It was an excellent base for hiking in the stunning mountains around Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
