We recently spent two days in Custer, SD, and it was fantastic. Custer is a perfect base camp for taking in all the surrounding sites including Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument, Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, Custer St. Park wildlife loop, and the Custer St. Park Sylvan Lake area including Black Elk Peak-Little Devils Tower-Cathedral Spires hikes.

Great central location to Custer State Park, Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, Mt Rushmore. You can get a decent meal. It is not just burger restaurants. Custer State Park has incredible wildlife especially at dawn and dusk. It is as good as most National Parks. The Custer tourist area is the same as any of the others but the buffalo sculptures set it apart. There is also a farmer's market downtown.Cynthia - 10Scored 10

It’s well worth the drive from Rapid City, and it’s conveniently located so you can stay a couple days and hit all the sites like Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore, Black Hills, Bear Country, Custer State Park, etc. It’s nice to get away from the overpriced big chains, and actually meet the owner of the property.
