Home to one of America’s icons – the Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco is a liberal city where life is very much for the living.
Surrounded by water on 3 sides, the city's spread over steep hills that make for great photo ops. And none better than the zig-zag Lombard Street, seen in many a film. Even more famous are San Fran's iconic trolleys climbing the hills – a little touristy, but still worth a ride.
In the middle of the bay, Alcatraz island is known for the notorious criminals once imprisoned there. Even if you don’t go inside, the views of the bridge and city are unparalleled.
Nowhere is life in San Francisco more laid-back than on the Pacific beaches. Rent a bike and head out there, passing through the huge Golden Gate Park, before returning to sample some fresh seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf. Don't miss the clam chowder served in bread bowls! Chinatown also has a great selection of mid-range restaurants.
As you fly into San Francisco Airport, look out for the exclusive homes lining the Bay Area. Whether you want a more independent stay in apartments, luxury San Francisco hotels or cheap hostels, Booking.com has something for everyone. Be careful though – you might just leave your heart here!

I go to San Francisco frequently for concerts, and I love staying overnight and going out for dinner and cocktails. Union Square was pleasant with Flowers in Bloom, a local theme to beautify the Union Square area. Casual pre-show bite to eat at Osha Thai in the TL. My show was at the Great American Music Hall, I had breakfast at The Post Room in the Beacon Grand Hotel, and coffee and desserts from Miller & Lux Provisions Cafe.

Lots to see, a long weekend is the perfect amount of time.
Lots to see, a long weekend is the perfect amount of time. The hop on hop off bus is great to get you *close* to destinations, but don’t plan on seeing from the bus unless you hop off! The trip to see the Golden State bridge was great!
Despite it being super touristy, the Wharf hosted some really good restaurants and shopping was great. The trips to Alcatraz sell out, so buy ahead of time if you can! (They leave from pier 33). We saw magician Jay Alexander at the Marrakesh club.. he was amazing!!! Highly reccomend the show!… last, dress in layers! Have fun!

We originally booked a hotel in Union Square, but upon arrival, immediately changed hotel to one out on Fisherman's Wharf. My partner and I didn't feel safe or comfortable in the city, and we weren't about to walk the streets like we originally planned. Unfortunately, drugs and homelessness are rife in the city.
While Fisherman's Wharf is packed with tourists, we felt a lot safer and were able to enjoy walking along the bay during the day. Plus, there were plenty of food and gift shop options to keep us occupied.
A tour of Alcatraz is a must if you are visiting San Fran, and going to a baseball game at Oracle Park was also a memorable experience.

I am not much of a city person, but I had to visit San Francisco to do some Visa work. It’s very easy to get around, locals are helpful, and the “Downtown” Is not congested. I was amazed at the cleanliness of the area I stayed in and how the neighbourhoods are decorated and gardens planted by the residents. There are some seedy areas, but if you avoid these, you have plenty of nice areas and fun things to do. The ambience and architecture remind me of southern Europe. I was warned about the rain, but I had 4 days of clear skies. It was May, but cooler than I expected, and windy. I would have been more comfortable with a hooded coat. The atmosphere is relaxed, casual, and friendly.
WE had excellent service, good food at breakfast and good selection. Nice touch having the wine hour from 5-6pm. The location was great. We walked to the munibus to catch downtown, only 3 blocks away. Nice having the beautiful park across the street to walk in and enjoy a coffee. We also caught the big bus tour just down on Haight and that area had nice restaurants in it. Overall it was all easy access to lots of ammenities! Would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in San Francisco!
This hotel is a gem. We loved the great attention given to details: soft linen, comfortable beds, materials used, Smeg fridge in the rooms, perfect cleanliness, delicious pastries for breakfast,...
Add to that that the staff is super friendly and helpful, that there is large chilling room and that the location is very very close to Union Square.
Honestly, I don't think that there are two places like this in San Francisco: Value for money is impossible to be beaten.
Good location, almost on Union Square with all its' upmarket shops.
Friendly, obliging staff.
Quirky hotel - there's a theatre on 2nd floor and some society called Elks Lodge have a huge presence / history here.
Comfortable lounge / reception area where they serve complimentary sherry each afternoon and coffee / biscuits each morning. A nice touch.
Generous size bedroom, walk-in wardrobe and very nice bathroom with plush towels and toiletries.
I've stayed at numerous Union Square hotels in the last 15 years and this is by far the best for that budget. Recently renovated, the rooms are bright, quiet, large and with all modern comfort. The lobby and bar area are gorgeous. The 3 elevators ensure you never wait more than 30 seconds to get to or from your room. The staff is helpful and nice, and there is a breakfast restaurant within the building.
There is nothing good to say about the hotel, the rooms are tired and worn, the restaurant for breakfast was dreadful, the location is “crime central” the location is no fault of the hotel but if your staying in Union Square at any hotel you are just a few metres from Tenderloin, if you don’t know this area it’s city centre drug crime and homeless area a total disgrace to America.
The hotel is very nice. The room was very clean, the bed comfortable, and the bathroom spacious and clean. There was a nice wardrobe to put your clothes. Staff was very friendly, and location excellent! A couple of blocks away from the cable car, Union Square and right next to China town. In front of a very nice French Cafe to have breakfast. Lively and friendly area.
1. The hotel has a perfect location:
- Right next to China town, close to Union square, close to metro and financial district.
- Train from the airport stops nearby.
- The neighbourhood looks very safe.
- There are plenty of bars, restaurants and shops nearby.
2. The hotel looks clean
3. The price is acceptable for San Francisco standards
Very accommodating staff. Assistance with luggage provided on arrival. We requested highest floor possible in quiet area and were not disappointed. Great view from our window. Quiet. Comfortable room and beds. Wonderful touches in room and hotel in general, despite covid regulations. A few blocks from Union Square. Very centrally located.
The gym in this hotel is amazing, something that I haven't seen in years in a hotel. The staff is also one of the best I've seen in many years, they assisted promptly to all of our requests. And the location cannot be better in San Francisco. I've stayed in a couple of hotels in this area and this is the best one hands down.
- The location is very convenient, right at the downtown core and close to the Union Square.
- Lots of restaurants around the hotel and a CVS convenient right across the street for all the amenities that the hotel can't provide.
- Close to lots of public transit options
- The room is clean
The staff were so friendly, the room was great. we arrived super early in the morning and got a room immediately and we were even upgraded because we celebrated our honeymoon. The hotel has the best location ever in the middle of Union Square I highly recommend it!
Cute boutique hotel in the heart of Union Square. Very basic hotel, but it has all the necessities. Staff were friendly, it was comfortable, and fairly priced. Not very spacious, but understandably so since it is a historic building in the heart of downtown.
Great value. The hotel and our room were clean. It was an older hotel but kept up nicely. It was on the border of Union Square and an area known for not being particularly nice, but we always felt safe. It was a great value for the price.
The hotel also hosts the San Francisco Playhouse. Currently they’re showing a chorus line, which we went and saw. But they have shows throughout the year in the theater is an excellent place to visit if you’re staying near Union Square.
Great hotel off the main Market Street in downtown San Francisco. Very central to main attractions and public transport. Clean and tidy. Good bed and pillows. Quiet. Nice reception area to sit and plan things.
Great, very nice hotel in downtown area of San Francisco. Bed was comfortable and everything clean. Water is for free, you can refill your bottle on each floor. We enjoyed our stay.
Hotel is located in a quiet Street in downtown. 3 blocks to union square. Bus stop is at the door.
The suite is very clean with high standard upgrade. The staff is very helpful.
Great location with short walk to Union Square, however on the edge of parts of San Francisco that tourists best avoid. Cafe next door does great breakfast. Staff were brilliant.
If you wish to spend more time at the piers a d tourist places this is a great location. Union square has some great hotels but it’s more of a business area.
