The Glory of Medieval England
Lincoln was a powerhouse of medieval England and retains amazing monuments from that period. In the Uphill district is the castle built for William the Conqueror. Inside its an original copy of the Magna Carta and its ramparts offer fabulous city views. Across the cobbled square which houses the large Christmas market is huge Lincoln Cathedral whose unusual façade features 2 tall towers, while another at its centre overlooks the Bishop’s Palace.
Connecting the cathedral quarter with the Downhill district is aptly named Steep Hill, a narrow street lined with unique shops and historic buildings including the Jew’s House. Even older are the Roman Newport Arch, Mint Wall and the well on Bailgate.
This road slopes down to meet the River Witham at High Bridge, a stone-arched structure with a half-timbered building atop that is the oldest of its kind in England. Lincoln boat trips depart from the Brayford Pool just west.
Another monument is the 18th-century Ellis Mill, opposite the Museum of Lincolnshire Life. The Collection combines an archaeology museum and art gallery, while The Lawn has a conference centre and the Joseph Banks Conservatory, displaying artefacts he brought back from adventures with Captain Cook.

Lincoln is a good place to visit with a lot of history to look around. The cathedral area is walkable from the newer centre albeit up Steep Hill which as it's name suggests is tiring but worth it. Not too touristy.
Not too touristy. Must-sees are the castle and cathedral, and (if you can manage it) Steep Hill. Plenty of independent shops and restaurants, as well as all the chains on the flat part near the river. City walk (most weekends and free, with donations) really worth doing.

Love it all, from the shopping on the high street, the wonderful new Corn Exchange area and on up steep hill to the cathedral/castle quarter. We would recommend the free walking tours, we did the Roman history one and Matt our guide was brilliant, showing us remnants of the roman walls and giving us a visual idea of how things were. There are plenty of pubs and bars to choose from but we particularly loved the Magna Carta, which had a brilliant band playing on the night we went in. History, shopping, and a great big hill! Well worth the effort walking up Steep Hill to get the inspirational Cathedral atop; plus there are plenty of boutique shops to pop in on the way for a rest. As a bonus for the kids is that there's a good ice-cream parlour at the bottom and a local fudge shop almost at the top!

We liked the numerous places to eat. We enjoyed visiting inside the Castle, the walk around the Castle walls, and seeing the Magna Carta. The steep walk was an enjoyable bit of exercise. We were disappointed at the cost of and limited access to the Cathedral, I really expected to be able to enjoy and discover more of its splendour.SimonUnited Kingdom

It was only a short walk into Lincoln town centre and the quayside. The cafe in the courtyard was owned by the hotel and provided a good cooked breakfast at a reasonable price. The receptionist was extremely friendly and helpful. The furniture in the room was old fashioned but this is exactly what we like in a hotel room. The manager was friendly and helpful. The hotel position is great for the castle and cathedral. Car park very close and only £9 for 24hrs. Will definitely be staying again hopefully won't leave it 7 years til our next visit.
