We loved this place, location is perfect close to the tortuguero national park and quiet at the same time. The hotel is awesome and the guys who work there are really informative and professional.
We also had a chance to see a monkey right on the tree in front of our room.

La comida.
The town is ok - plenty of eateries. The accommodation at Cabinas Sports Fishing was wonderful! The early morning boat trip was very enjoyable, as was the Jaguar trail in the National Park. The Budda Cafe has a nice vibe and good food. We were there in April so missed the turtle nesting season but still very much worth a visit!

What a gem.
What a gem. We had three nights here but in hindsight could have done two (a lot of people just do one). Two nights gives you a chance to soak up the atmosphere and explore the village from end to end.
It was an experience getting there - a 1hr boat trip (which can be longer depending on the water levels). On arrival we were surprised at the number of bars and restaurants - a huge variety. Many on the waterfront and how wonderful to have no cars. Our hotel met us at the wharf and transferred our luggage.
The hotels are right amongst the locals houses - so you really get to know the village and can hear all the 'goings on'. Just walking around you see the houses, some of the challenges living there, the flora and fauna.
We did a motor boat tour at 9am - would recommend doing this at 6am as the forest wakes up. Its amazing on the water - seeking the birds close up, camen, monkeys and iguanas. You will see more animals on a tour of the forest but its still worth the experience.
The motor boat tour includes national park entry - but I would recommend using a guide in the park as despite what you think its really hard to spot animals without the 'experienced eye'; and of course its their livelihood. I also did a night tour - there were a lot of other night tours - we walked along the route to the airport so it didn't feel super secluded - but we did see an armadillo, spiders, a snake, sloth and an iguana. Just goes to show nature is all around us - but again I would never have seen it without the experienced guide.
Overall its quite an experience and would suggest Tortuguera is a 'must have' on a Costa Rica itinerary.

Loved the fact that the boat dropped us off at the hotel's dock and picked us up here as well. Checkin was a breeze but make sure you have the cash to pay for the room and any tours. Canoe/boat tours, day hikes, night walks were arranged by the hotel in advance for very nominal rates. The tours start right at the hotel and hence very convenient.
The hotel sits on the banks of the river and the views are lovely especially during dusk and dawn. We experienced torrential rain one afternoon and during the night. The rain in the afternoon did not last long. The canals are accessible by boat, canoe and kayaks. Tortuguero is laid back and a nice place to wind down and experience time float by.
Great place to see Great Green Macaws fly by during dawn and dusk. We also saw the last of the turtle hatchings make their way to the sea. Wonderful sight to experience. The town and beach are easily accessible. The canals are teeming in wildlife. We saw green basilisks, iguanas, jacanas, toucans, caimans, herons and monkeys (howler, spider and capuchin). On the night walk we saw frogs (Savage's bullfrog, red-eyed tree frog, some snakes, and a sloth at close range.
The hotel staff were nice. The free breakfast was an added bonus. Laundry service was available for a fee. The town was easily accessible by foot. Local food at the sodas was fulfilling. Overall a wonderful experience!

It was like going to the Amazon River and experiencing wildlife and diversity. It was a multi cultural place with a taste of how locals villagers live , ocean access, river access and the best part is watching conservation of turtles. Turtle night tour is a must do!!?

The Tortuguero area is considerably different from the rest...
The Tortuguero area is considerably different from the rest of Costa Rica. Isolated from land transport, all access is done either by boat or plane. Opt for the boat if you can. It's cheap (around 8000 colones round trip from La Pavona), and despite being on a public transport you'll have a tour experience. The trip can take up to 1,5 hours, with safety conditions guarateed (life vests) and you'll be winding through the florest canals until you reach the Tortuguero sandbar. much like running down the Amazonas, The village is very small but with a great ambient of friendly people (general fact in all CR) with plenty of options for food/drinks, accomodations. Tortuguero life runs around sightseeing (National Park, turtle tours, and cannoeing in the canals). At night you'll have plenty of options for sunset and dinning. You're in a protected area for marine turtles and the mindset is all around that. Forget about bathing in the river or the beach, as one it's inhabited by crocodiles and the other with bull sharks,
The staff at this hotel were all very friendly and attentive. The rooms and premises were constantly being cleaned and maintained. Breakfast and evening meals were all freshly cooked.
The hotel is located in Tortuguero village which allowed us to explore the area independently and easy access to tours.
A 15% discount is offered on drinks served at the sister hotel which is right by the beach. It serves a great variety of drinks and offers a wide variety of seating options all benefitting from a welcome sea breeze.
Combining laid-backless with light jungle luxury for a great price this place is right “central” in the Tortuguero village (something that we didn’t realise how important it is when booking). The pool is delightful, and the beach-stretch also. Combining a morning maritime tour with a self-administered walk in the National park in the afternoon is splendid, and the place can recommend the best tours, set you up with massage in the in-house mini-spa or just be generally lovely. Air-con worked well.
situated in a beautiful area along the canals of tortuguero. food is buffet style and of good quality. we stayed for one night and spent another at a different small hotel in tortuguero village. Heidi on reception was very helpful she organised a driver to collect us from la Pavona to guapiles, where we picked up our hire car. She also organised a motor boat trip along the canals with Angelo at 6am which was excellent we saw lots of wildlife. A wonderful start to our holiday in Costa Rica
big room for myself, with kitchen and patio, right in front of the beach.
it's out of the village centre so it's very quiet which I love. the beach is beautiful. sunrise on the beach right in front of my door. the night tour starts right around the corner. it's a 10min walk to the centre but I never felt unsafe to walk there even at night by myself as a girl. besides you can walk on the beach
was lucky to baby turtles hatching walking on the beach away from the village centre
The host was very friendly and helpful, showing us where the local shop and drinking water supply was. Anything extra we needed for the kitchen he provided. Cleaned the apartment and bedding during our stay. He offered many other things and was very helpful all round. The property is in the heart of the local community and very close to the national park entrance, as well as an easy stroll into town or to the beach.
Location was fantastic - a short walk to the beach and path to Tortuguero town. This is the main reason we chose this hotel, and we're really glad we did. Room was a great size and lovely and clean. Food was lovely, and Jorge, our main waiter, was fantastic. Pool area, cafe & pool were all lovely. Grounds were beautiful and the guided walk with Angie was fantastic. The boat tour was also great.
this location is perfect. the apartment is amazing. I originally booked for one week and ended up staying 2 more! if you enjoy living in nature with wildlife around you while also being very comfortable. when I go back to Tortuguero, this is the only place I will stay. private with a view and sound of the ocean, while iguanas and tucans are on display !!
A charming little place with a lovely owner. She arranged wonderful tours with us with a great local guide. We loved being so close to the national park, where we could walk and see all kinds of wildlife. Breakfast on the patio overlooking the water was delicious. It was nice being away from all the tourists and getting a feel of a local village.
Clean room in an ecofriendly hostel with very friendly staff.
The receptionist walks you trough the little village to the office and gives you some nice tips about the restaurants and shops.
The hotel also offers excursions and activities. We were very pleased with the electric boat tour on the Tortuguero NP canals with Celimo as our guide.
Great place in Tortuguero near the village centre. Right on the beach. Staff is suuuuper friendly! They have a great service with a tour guide who picked us up at the dock and brought us to the hotel, explained us about things to do in Tortuguero and helped us book a tour. The rooms are nice and even had warm water. Great value for money.
From the beginning to the end, Gerson, the main person that I was in contact with, was super helpful and friendly.
I loved that there was a fully equipped kitchen and the location was the best, across the beautiful beach; and access to the river from the other side; also close to town and restaurants, Tortuguero Park, and more.
Location is excellent, less than a 5 minute walk form the main pier where you get dropped off. Gorgeous views from Buddha cafe opposite the hotel. Staff went above and beyond to accomodate us. Great stay and value for money in Tortuguero. Air conditioning and wifi worked really well.
The hostess Vicky is absolutely great! Very aware of her guests and their needs! She even washed our clothes for free and showed us how to cock the fish we caught, the traditional Costa Rican way! Cannot recommend this place enough! Everything you need in a place to stay!
Literally right across from the beach, you can hear the waves crashing at night. The room was comfortable, included instant coffee. The guides that work with the hotel were some of the best we’ve ever had, the tours were like a real life David Attenborough special.
Arranged activities and transportation made our stay very easy and pleasant. Room was very spacious and with beautiful terrace (room on 1st floor). Can enjoy sunset sitting on the hotel's porch right on the river. Vicinity to food and national park.
It is located at the boundary of the national park so we were able to see quite a lot of wildlife, spider monkeys, macaws, toucans, etc. There have been jaguars seen as well but we weren't lucky enough to see one.
It was right on the beach, it was clean and the breakfast was good with fresh juice. It was just a short walk to the Main Street and the streets to the hotel were paved so it was easy to walk with suitcases.
Central location, good for restaurants and shops. Beautiful terrace looking over the river. Staff were lovely, very helpful. The hotel has an excellent guide who leads the trips to the National Park.
