The site seeing of historical places were the best. Most of the time we ate at the hotel and visited some locals and shared a meal with them. We hired a vehicle during the tour, This gave us the flexibility to get around. Net time I'll try to get there in the cooler months, mid December.

Lot of ancient locations and relics. Can gain much information about historical Polonnaruwa era of Sri Lanka. Spread is in close vicinity and can cover all areas even without a travel guide. My favourite places were Parakrama Samudraya, museum, King Parakramabahu's castle and office, Gal Viharaya, Thiwanka Pilima geya, Vatadage, Hetadage and Sathmahal Prasadaya. There are places to eat in Polonnaruwa new town (Very close by). We dined at NS Tomatoes where the service was good.AAnonymous - 10Scored 10
It's worth making the effort to see the far northern and far...
It's worth making the effort to see the far northern and far southern area too.... and don't forget to check out the back roads in the quadrangle group. The site is full of tourists, but almost nobody at the above mentioned places.

Polonnaruwa has impressive archeological and historic areas...
Polonnaruwa has impressive archeological and historic areas which are in good conditions despite of the years. The Minneriya National Park, the Dambulla cave temple and the Sigiriya Rock are also near and it makes Polonnaruwa a perfect base to visit all of them. We stayed about 14km outside polonnaruwa on lake giritale.
We stayed about 14km outside polonnaruwa on lake giritale. We got a tuk tuk into town (1500 rupees) and hired bikes for the day (1000 rupees each). We found a cycle route online and followed that, which took us to all the main sites. It was hot but we had a great time. Stop for a drink at the EKO hotel on the lake- a great spot!

Food was amazing and the room very spacious. We had great talks and Opali told us a lot about his life and Sri Lankas situation. He even did a night walk with us where we saw lots of animals. Also, the place is perfectly located if you want to visit the ancient city, you can even rent bikes directly at the house. In Polonnaruwa I would go there again any time. Plenty of workers trimming plants and cleaning property. Breakfast buffet also was great. Definitely recommend if you are in the area.
