FAQs about hotels in Zell am See

Mountain Paradise in Salzburg Province

A paradise in the Austrian state of Salzburg, Zell am See is located along the shores of the Zell Lake and surrounded by mountains like the 2000-metre high Schmittenhöhe. It is an important ski centre in the winter and a hiking and mountain-biking paradise during summer.

The area has been occupied since Roman times, but the village was founded around the year 740 by the order of Bishop Johannes I of Salzburg. The picturesque Old Town includes typical Alpine style buildings, as well as the oldest building of the region, St. Hippolyte's Church. The Austrian area of Zell am See offers a wide range of hotels, B&B’s, apartments, and guest houses.

The leisure centre has a covered pool, a sauna and steam bath, and special facilities for kids. Zell am See is a gateway to the Hohe Tauern National Park, the biggest of the Alps and Austria’s oldest.

The nearby town of Kaprun is home to the 12th-century Kaprun Castle and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. Salzburg Airport is 100 km away, while Sixt Innsbruck Airport is 150 km away. Whether  you’re searching for hotels in Zell am See with ski facilities, or a cosy ‘gasthaus’ with a garage for your bike, check out the variety available on Booking.com!

Zell am See is a town on the route of the Transalpin train.

Zell am See is a town on the route of the Transalpin train. We stayed for one night before our journey across the alps to Zurich. If you don't ski, there is little to do in town when it's cold outside besides a stroll along the beautiful lake and a visit to shops and restaurants. One 24-hour period was enough for us to see and do everything. The location of the train station made this a very easy place to visit.

Zell am See didn't have the quaint alps village feel at all,...

Zell am See didn't have the quaint alps village feel at all, more like a regular large town, the high street was very disappointing. The scenery of the lake and mountains was breath taking. Simply beautiful. Snow for skiing in Feb 24 was absolutely awful given the low altitude! A lot of mud patches on the lower runs rendering them unusable. I would consider elsewhere for skiing option tbh. The ski resort was small and good for beginners/families primarily. I felt very safe walking around the town.

    We loved Zell am See.

We loved Zell am See. From the ease of getting here (the train from Salzburg is clean, quick and on time), to the scenery, beautiful town and great people. Everyone was pleasant to deal with, the facilities are excellent (although watch out for the supermarkets closing early compared to the UK) and the skiing is brilliant. Lift queues were generally short. However, as expected, everything is expensive!

What I like the most: Friendly staff, free use of washing machine and dryer at the lobby, underground garage, spacious living room and fully equipped kitchen, near the lake for a leisure walk and near to town and near to a lot of ski lifts and cable car to Schmittenhöhe What I don like: nothing. Just be sure not to have a late check in so that you can seek for help before the reception close

Zell am See is truly beautiful.

Zell am See is truly beautiful. We had an amazing week of skiing with an excellent ski guide (Thomas Hager, https://www.alpin-guide.com/eng/), who added so much to our ski holiday experience. The town of Zell am See has an array of great restaurants, bars and shops. We travelled over the Christmas period and the place was festive with lots of Christmas spirit in the air! We would highly recommend a trip to Zell am See.

Zell am See is a proper small town with a lovely pedestrian...

Zell am See is a proper small town with a lovely pedestrian zone and not just a ski resort. It is located on one side of a beautiful lake, surrounded by mountains. There's a good choice of places to eat and drink and I particularly like the Gin House and Steinerwirt. I get the sense it's quite a good place for a mixed group of those who ski/snowboard and those who don't, but it's particularly good for skiers as there are several lift options from and around the town, so wherever you stay you'll probably be close to one of the base lifts. Accommodation on the hill just above the town will have great views and, provided you leave your equipment at a base station or have a car, the walk is quite pleasant.

We had a great break in Zell Am See and the hotel Gruner Baum was the perfect base for us to explore the stunning views of the surrounding area. Everything about the hotel was fantastic, we stayed in room 140 which was modern, clean and extremely comfortable with a great view from the balcony. The breakfast was exceptional and catered for all nationalities, every member of staff was friendly and helpful and the little bar in the 2nd building was a great place for an evening drink with a lively atmosphere and welcoming young barman

Perfect location: I came by train for a 5-day skiing trip. It takes only 4 min. on foot to reach the hotel from the train station, and then a 3 min. walk from the hotel to the cable car. Great, quickly served breakfasts with fresh ingredients and tasty coffee. Well-equipped and clean sauna with a tank on the rooftop A very nice concept of a quiet lounge with comfortable beds and sofas, where you can chill, read and enjoy free beverages (variety of teas, water). The room was clean, spacious and just fine for me.

Central location. Near to post bus stand. Nice room. Welcome was warm and staff explained everything very well. This is a family run traditional hotel which is hundred of years old I guess. Once you step in it takes you back in time. Staffs wear traditional dresses most of the time which really gives you a special authentic feeling about your holiday in Austria. Definitely pocket friendly than other hotels in zell am see for a family and almost last minute booking.

We travelled by train so being able to walk to the hotel from the train station was nice. Breakfast every morning was great. Decent selection of hot and cold items. The hotel provided the Zell am See summer card which allowed entrance free of charge to many local attractions, and discounts at many others. It also allowed use of local public transportation. For us this was a huge bonus. All of our activities while in town were free!!
