This town is a car crash! - despite Unesco city of creativity.
1-2 hours plenty to look around the last remaining intact bits of town, apart from visiting on a Thursday when supposedly there is a market going on.
So many other places to see in the area!
Why waste your time?

We were there for Dance World Cup finals in Braga so didn't see a lot of Barcelos but surrounding areas very beautiful. Lots of stunning countryside covered in vineyards. Definitely would go back to explore more!

The city is beautiful and with a lot of monuments and churches to visit. It also had some pretty interesting shops in a central shopping area and some interesting looking restaurants. From traditional to hipster food- you can find everything there. The day I visited, the city had a huge market in the center, street food and entertainment. There were some traditional music concerts, traditional dancing, flower and light decorations all over... Very pretty. I was positively surprised by the mixture of historical and city-like vibes.

This is a wonderful town on the Portuguese Camino with a significant amount of charm and history. Spend some time in the town. The tourist office is extremely helpful and informative. They are a whole host of options for food and shopping.

Barcelos is an attractive market town, worth a visit in its own right. We visited to see the famous Thursday morning market but were a little disappointed. As veterans of many markets around the world, this was large and certainly worth seeing for the wide range of delicious local produce, including ducklings and other young fowls for sale and traditional gardening and tilling instruments plus locally made diy materials. There was modern furniture too. However, we found the pottery and earthenware a little disappointing, stall after stall of basic chunky red clay pots, but few quality or hand painted items. Also few traditional cotton items for which Portugal is so renowned - towels, bedspreads, curtains, tablecloths. We could happily have spent more time exploring Barcelos itself but had only allowed time for the market, before the short drive to Porto.

Barcelos is a sleepy, medieval town where we stayed for 4 nights in total. The town has several nice bars and restaurants with numerous medieval buildings if you're after some history.
The one downside being we struggled to get Ubers out of the town and down to Porto and Braga.
Great location. Just right on the camino, and we got a corner room facing the river and the castle of Barcelos. Many good restaurants close to the hotel. In particular, Joan was very helpful and quickly response to issues we have. It just happened, we did not find our transferred luggage when we arrived at the hotel. And on the day there is no reception staff. Joan responded very quickly on this issue, finding that our luggage was misplaced into another guest room by the housekeeper. She managed to solve the issue quickly.
The property was exactly like in the pictures and it was really clean and packed with loads of details.
The hosts went the extra mile allowing us to check out later. They were replying to messages really quick and were understanding when we provoked a small issue with one chair in the living room.
Barcelos is a very nice town very convenient to visit Braga, Guimaraes and Porto. It's full of places to eat and have drinks and do some nice sightseeing too
I would recommend this property 100%
We stayed here while we were on our Camino o porto to Santiago. The room and the facilities were welcomed after our long walk, we can recommend the hotel's restaurant too which had lovely good quality food and wine at a reasonable price.
The hotel reception desk helped us to organise sending our bagpacks to our next destination (we had no idea how to do this at that stage) and it worked like a dream!
The breakfast was far better than we expected and set us well fed on our Camino.
Amazing family-run country estate surrounded by nature, green hills and lemon groves. The staff was extremely caring and accommodating (Phillipa, we already miss you!), facilities and location are excellent, a nice breakfast. A perfect spot for a relaxing vacation with tons of options for exciting day-trips all around the wonderful Northern Portugal. We hope to be back next year!
A superb option for a brief stay in Barcelos. Just outside the train station, which makes it convenient for anyone with an early train to catch, but it does make it a little noisy. You can hear the announcements of trains arriving, very clearly. But fortunately they stop at 10 or 11 at night, so it is possible to get a good night's sleep. Very clean and helpful staff.
There is no one on site and you have to check in just down the road at the Art Hotel. Bedroom was comfortable with private shower room. Unfortunately it was quite noisy with the other guests in and out - loud door bangs etc. Could just be thin walls. There is a communal kitchen and sitting area which is very handy. Check out was easy.
very good location, right across the River from Barcelos where you’ll find lots of restaurants, cafes and sights. the host is also incredible - he washed our clothes when we arrived, and when they weren’t dry the next day due to rain, took them into town to a dryer. also gave us lots of great recommendations for what to do in town.
This is a wonderful place to stay if you are walking the Camhino. It is like a luxurious boutique hotel but it has small extra details like a sitting area with complementary teas and coffees and facilities to make a simple snack. A 7.30 breakfast is perfect for peregrinos on the move. I would highly recommend Top Otel.
Everything was just lovely!!!!
Beautiful, comfortable room with views of the city and surrounding mountains. The service was friendly and very, very helpful and accommodating. Convenient location. If you plan to stay in Barcelos I highly recommend Casa da Ana.
The staff were very helpful. This is a very nice hotel. We had a room with a balcony. It was large and comfortable. We were walking so we left very early - just before the breakfast got started.
Great design and organisation especially for caminho. Excellent location. Great breakfast on the top floor with great view. Loved Barcelos, and great hostel/guest house.
location was pretty good. it’s linked to the hotel just down the road. a decent check in experience with the girls behind the desk being very polite and accommodating
This hotel is on the Camino and right in the city center. My room was huge and had a bathtub, nice for soaking feet. Breakfast was great. Terrific value for price
The hotel, located in downtown of Barcelos, was modern and comfortable. It's a large hotel room with a double bed and 2 single beds. We enjoyed our stay.
