This town is a car crash! - despite Unesco city of creativity.
1-2 hours plenty to look around the last remaining intact bits of town, apart from visiting on a Thursday when supposedly there is a market going on.
So many other places to see in the area!
Why waste your time?

We were there for Dance World Cup finals in Braga so didn't see a lot of Barcelos but surrounding areas very beautiful. Lots of stunning countryside covered in vineyards. Definitely would go back to explore more!

The city is beautiful and with a lot of monuments and churches to visit. It also had some pretty interesting shops in a central shopping area and some interesting looking restaurants. From traditional to hipster food- you can find everything there. The day I visited, the city had a huge market in the center, street food and entertainment. There were some traditional music concerts, traditional dancing, flower and light decorations all over... Very pretty. I was positively surprised by the mixture of historical and city-like vibes.

This is a wonderful town on the Portuguese Camino with a significant amount of charm and history. Spend some time in the town. The tourist office is extremely helpful and informative. They are a whole host of options for food and shopping.

Barcelos is an attractive market town, worth a visit in its own right. We visited to see the famous Thursday morning market but were a little disappointed. As veterans of many markets around the world, this was large and certainly worth seeing for the wide range of delicious local produce, including ducklings and other young fowls for sale and traditional gardening and tilling instruments plus locally made diy materials. There was modern furniture too. However, we found the pottery and earthenware a little disappointing, stall after stall of basic chunky red clay pots, but few quality or hand painted items. Also few traditional cotton items for which Portugal is so renowned - towels, bedspreads, curtains, tablecloths. We could happily have spent more time exploring Barcelos itself but had only allowed time for the market, before the short drive to Porto.

Barcelos is a sleepy, medieval town where we stayed for 4 nights in total. The town has several nice bars and restaurants with numerous medieval buildings if you're after some history.
The one downside being we struggled to get Ubers out of the town and down to Porto and Braga.
Really loved my hotel room and top 10 in the world for my experience with extensive world travel. Definately exceptional design blend of original old stone with clean contemporary lines, fixtures and comfort. My room overlooking medieval courtyard with fountain and lovely shops theater and restaurants. Hotel building attached to lovely Historaal caffe with excellent coffee vino and food below. Absolutely charming.
Amazing family-run country estate surrounded by nature, green hills and lemon groves. The staff was extremely caring and accommodating (Phillipa, we already miss you!), facilities and location are excellent, a nice breakfast. A perfect spot for a relaxing vacation with tons of options for exciting day-trips all around the wonderful Northern Portugal. We hope to be back next year!
Lovely. Over the road from the main alburgue which was full when I arrived. This is an extension of the hotel art further down the road, you have to check in down there. Lovely clean room, en-suite, downstairs communal lounge and kitchen large and clean. Balcony to hang your laundry. Was very happy to stay here rather than the hostel.
very good location, right across the River from Barcelos where you’ll find lots of restaurants, cafes and sights. the host is also incredible - he washed our clothes when we arrived, and when they weren’t dry the next day due to rain, took them into town to a dryer. also gave us lots of great recommendations for what to do in town.
The property was amazing! The building was beautiful, clean, and the staff was professional, friendly, and helpful. Loved that we had a balcony room and our family very much enjoyed the back patio space with pool and lounge. The area was perfect and an easy walk to many places. Would definitely stay again if ever back in Portugal!
The staff was really nice and thoughtful, the breakfasts were delicious, and the location provided a beautiful view across the river to Barcelos! The bathroom in our suite was very large and comfortable. Our room happened to be next to a yard with a rooster that crowed frequently, which was sincerely very fun to listen to.
Close to the centre of town, and located near restaurants. Room was big enough to include a tiny desk with the only chair in the room. Largest shower I have experienced so far in Portugal. Breakfast in the main hotel was lovely.Very pleasant hotel staff both at checkin and breakfast.
The staff is very very polite and friendly. Location is very good since you are in the center of the city of Barcelos. There's a great potential for this hotel, but sadly, i think the management is not putting some budget in order to keep it in shape.
-Good location with view over valley
-New hotel with capacity for many guests
-Swimming pool
-Safe parking behind wall/fence, also good for bicycle
-LARGE quantity of dinner
-good breakfast
-very good room
-quiet area (except for few trains)
Amazing family property, a lovely garden and pool. The family is welcoming and the staff is very helpful. Has great potential but lacks a bit of that hotel professional service that justifies the price.
I absolutely recommend this hotel, is the best place to stay in Barcelos. Very friendly, you feel part of the family they make you feel so welcome love it ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Hotel is located close to big plaza, shopping, cathedral and the Camino Way. Our room was very big with a foyer and a sitting room overlooking the big plaza.
