Take the fast ferry (4 hours) from Bergen and slow down and enjoy the glorious surroundings. Be prepared to relax and enjoy the quiet. We ate our meals and enjoyed cocktails at the Kviknes Hotel. We slept at the Balestrand Hotel and enjoyed the quiet.

Arriving by ferry drops you at the heart of the town.
Arriving by ferry drops you at the heart of the town. Walking south along Kong Beles Veg for about 2 kilometers affords beautiful views of St. Olaf's church, the picturesque valley, the beach, the hills, and several "Swiss-style" charming old houses. A must-see is Balestrand's little beach and the deep, clear pools beside it where I sat for ages soaking up the sound of the water's tranquil lapping on the rocks and watching fish zip around way below the surface of the crystal-clear water. I even caught people swimming and sunning themselves at midday in late September! There were not many dining options post-tourist-season, but I had the soup at the chocolatery called Holmen within the main triangle of town, and though I found it overpriced (compared to prices in Bergen), it was delicious.

Our family absolutely loved staying at Frydenlund near Balestrand. Everything in the property's information was accurate. Great hosts who helped us when we had some questions, Views are wonderful and several areas in which to relax and enjoy them. Check-in was easy as there was a door code. While we would love to return to this part of Norway we would only do so if we could also stay at Frydenlund.

Beautiful location and friendly small town.
Beautiful location and friendly small town. Unfortunately it rained quite heavy in September 2019 when we were there so that we couldn't do much biking and hiking as we had anticipated, but there was still enough to do to keep us occupied the day and a half that we spent there. Dinner with a piano concert in the Kviknes Hotel was particularly memorable.

Cute town with a lot packed into a small place.
Cute town with a lot packed into a small place. Walking around town is easy. There are two grocery stores and plenty of restaurants. We went to an English Mass at St Olaf's Church too. If we had arrived earlier in the day we might have had time to fish from the shores of the fjord.
We were looking for a place to stay between Flam and Geiranger. We are happy that we went a little out of our way to visit Balestrand and stay at Kringsjå Hotel.
After we missed a ferry and called them, they accommodated a late check in. Our room was a clean and comfortable. It had a great view over Sognefjorden, very iconic. Breakfast was very good. There was plenty of parking. Balestrand made for a really pleasant morning walk.
Comfortable, cozy apartment in the heart of Balestrand within 2mins walking distance to Sognefjord! The apartment is fully equipped with everything - kitchen, towels, clean bed linens, a lively living room with dining table, big bathroom and a beautiful front yard! The owner was incredibly kind, responsive and even offered a personal blow dryer on request. Really enjoyed our stay and would definitely book again!
The staff was pleasant and friendly and gave good recommendations of restaurants in town. The free breakfast was decent and there were also full kitchens for guests to use. The views from the balcony were the best part of staying here! Really lovely view of the fjord. The room was quite clean and had everything we needed. There was ample free parking in a lot by the entrance.
Nice quiet setting with a stunning view of the fjord. John was very helpful at the front desk and very attentive. Even saw us downtown and tried to help us with a fjord boat booking, only to find out for us they were off that day for their son's confirmation. Very nice little town as well with access to nice hike in woods on top of the hill.
Great location, with views on the fjord on both sides and beautiful surroundings. Makes for a great stay.
Cleanliness done well in rooms.
Nice breakfast.
The restaurant has nice atmosphere & views, and some great food. I highly recommend a dinner there.
Staff is kind and polite, we had some unexpected situation and they were very helpful.
The reception was just superb, we haven't met such a friendly and welcoming hotel staff members in a while! I found the shabby chic of the hotel really charming, and all the perks (a game room, guest kitchens, entertainment area) made us feel like at home :) The view requires a separate mention, it's just stunning.
I will say my stay here was the highlight of my trip.. my room was basic but comfortable with an amazing view out to the fjord. Staff was always helpful . Also the town itself was so lovely to walk around especially in the shoulder season, it was so peaceful. It was the relaxing getaway I truly needed..
Very spacious, beautiful view, different seating areas (deck, sunroom, living room), very helpful hosts, short drive in to town, better appliances than we have at home! We loved staying at Frydenlund and Balestrand. If we return to this part of Norway again, we would have to stay at Frydenlund.
Although the nearby restaurant was closed, there was a Coop Prix and Joker supermarkets for us to buy our grocerries. Everything was perfect. As per our request, we were given an apartment with a balcony with sea view. In fact, this was the best place we stayed during our 16 days long journey.
Young people who have just taken over the hotel are transforming it into a place with vision. Cool people and nice atmosphere, definitely worth a visit!
The location is easily accessible from the port and has balconies with magnificent views.
Great breakfast with a large selection. Very friendly staff. Tesla destination charger, as well as generic vehicle charging options available. Room had a nice balcony (new wing). Historic hotel at a good location. Enjoyed our stay.
it is very close to the ferry pier and a few restaurants in town (2 min walk). it’s very spacious and has a nice stocked kitchen and a washing machine. Hot shower, comfy beds, great view - at half the price of hotels - loved it!
Balestrand is a hidden gem, a pleasant little town among the beautiful mountains by a beautiful fjord. Accomodation was perfect, one of the best in my life. Clean, private, well equipped and the host - Inge is very helpful.
Great huge apartment on the waterfront. Our group of 5 adults had plenty of room. We had a large deck overlooking the water. Convenient location to restaurants and the grocery store. I would highly recommend this apartment.
This was a quiet and serene place with spectacular views. The burger in the bar was delicious. The breakfast had a huge variety and was located in the historic part of the hotel. The front desk staff was extremely helpful.
Wow!! This place is amazing!!. It exceeded our expectations. Really well furnished, amazing views. I have no hesitation recommending Balestrand Fjordapartments Holmen 19A.
We will definitely stay longer next time.
This was a proper hotel with a lift, desk, case stand and everything you would expect. The staff were helpful and the location was good, not far from the harbour.
