Melrose is the 'jewel in the crown' of the Scottish Borders, with beautiful surrounding hills (Eildons) and lovely Borders towns nearby like Galashiels and Kelso. Borders folk are also very friendly and helpful. Sir Walter Scott's House at Abbotsford is wonderful and it's worth seeing the William Wallace Statue near Dryburgh.

Melrose is a nice little town with shops, cafés, bars and restaurnts, an interesting museum and a lovely historic site: the ruins of a mediaeval abbey. The scenery is picturesque with the river Tweed running through the town. As I love the outdoors, it was important for me to have a lot of hiking routes starting from the town. There are buses running from there, too, to all directions, so important places, the capital or even the sea are within easy reach.
I visited Dryburgh Abbey on foot and Kelso and Jedburgh by bus. A visit to Abbotsford, the house of Sir Walter Scott was absolutely intriguing. The rolling hills of the Borders are so beautiful that I would go back this instant if I could.

Trimontium Museum in Melrose market place is absolutely first class - about a huge Roman fort a couple of miles outside Melrose. Melrose Abbey was disappointing as most of it is fenced off whilst they carry out building inspections, and it didn't look like this would change any time soon. Dryburgh Abbey about 5 miles away is better. Abbotsford well worth a visit. We also took the train from Tweedbank to Edinburgh for the day which worked very well. Also visited the Great Scottish Tapestry in Galashiels which is an absolute must. Can recommend Provender in Melrose for dinner. Town centre has a range of independent shops and cafes.

Quaint small town.
Quaint small town. The Roman Museum is very good as is the visit to the Abbey, although, unlike last time you could not go into the abbey. I was there to begin the St. Cuthbert Trail walk to Lindisfarne. Sir Walter Scott's nearby home is worth a visit.

We love Melrose and visit often.
We love Melrose and visit often. We love browsing the small shops on the high street and they have a brilliant butcher in Martin Baird. A walk round the town is a delight, past the abbey, Harmony Garden and across the chain bridge to Gattonside - or up the Eildon's if you are feeling energetic. We also love Sir Walter Scott's home, Abbotsford which is a short car journey and the Tapestry of Scotland exhibition in Galashiels.
Getting to Melrose is relatively easy from Edinburgh Waverley station on the Borders light railway to Tweedbank, then a short taxi ride.

Melrose is a lovely little town.
Melrose is a lovely little town. Of course the Abbey is a wonderful attraction but there is also the Trimontium Museum and several lovely gardens and walks to explore. It's perfectly situated as a great base to visit other nearby attractions. There was a free minibus to Abbotsford available on certain days - what a bonus! There's also lots of little craft shops and some excellent cafes and restaurants.
A great home from home, spotlessly clean and extremely well equipped. I would say that the cottage has been recently refurbished to a good level. It is a short, scenic walk across the suspension footbridge to the lovely town of Melrose with its many quaint shops, pubs and restaurants, plus the abbey. There is also the Michelin star Seasons restaurant just a few meters down the road from the cottage. Large number of lovely walks nearby too, plus it's close to the Borders Hospital, which was the main draw for us on this visit.
We received a really nice email from our hosts explaining arrival procedure, as well as giving us info about the surrounding area and restaurants/cafes nearby. Really good info and a great recommendation for dinner nearby.
Very quiet location, easy to find, park etc and easy access to surrounding areas. Melrose is lovely and the hills nearly are great for running/walking, as well as along the river for a flatter route! The Stables is large with a well-equipped kitchen, great TV and WiFi.
Clare and Donald were exceptional hosts, from the very warm welcome with a hot drink and millionaire shortbread to our farewell with Tablet Fudge they were fantastic. The accommodation was first class, very clean, really comfortable and beautiful surroundings. Breakfast was lovely (especially the fruit and yogurt), we also liked Boris the Cat! We highly recommend staying at the Barn at the Coach House when you are near Melrose. The town of Melrose itself is also lovely.
Excellent breakfast with a comprehensive choice. The evening meal was slightly below standard; in fairness I think everyone was a bit "rusty" opening up after the lockdown and the preceding fire alarm can't have helped! The room was fine, although stripped to the essentials to comply with Covid requirements. However we enjoyed the traditional ambience of the hotel and its wonderful location on the Tweed
One of the very best accommodations we have ever stayed in over 35 years of holidays. Beautiful location above Melrose. Extensive garden and own sitting area in it. Amazingly well decorated house - flowers, paintings, candles. Attention to detail worthy of a 5 star hotel. Owners are most friendly and considerate. Breakfast was exceptionally good.
To be honest everything. Just 2 minutes walk from the centre of Melrose, 5 minutes walk to the river Tweed. To say the cottage has character would be a gross understatement, the name says it all. If it came up for sale I would buy it in a heartbeat. If you are looking for a romantic break to rekindle or start a relationship this is the place.
Very friendly staff fishnchips great fillet steak excellent lasagne great chicken fillet burger great. Breakfasts very, very good.Issue with room 4 hopefully sorted by management for next guests. Not a problem for us be aware this hotel is dog friendly. Clean room good quality bed linen bathroom and shower clean and hot water.
Breakfast was superb. Home cooked, excellent choice and quality. Staff were exceptionally pleasant and very attentive.
Hotel parking was ample and free , ideal location for walks to Eildon hills etc, and to explore the Borders .
Good breakfast and very nice staff. The location is good as it is in the center of Melrose close to shops and restaurants. The local bus service bus stop is a few yards away. Melrose Abbey is five minutes walk.
A nicely decorated spacious, well equipped cottage set in attractive grounds and in a peaceful location. The cottage is only a short walk from the centre of Melrose. We'd highly recommend this property.
Location is very good for access on foot to Melrose and by car to Scottish Borders towns. Plenty of space in house. Wifi signal (mobile EE) is very good and stable. Kitchen facilities are very good.
Melrose is a lovely town and noise from the street below stopped by late evening. Hotel staff worked hard to provide a good service, especially the young waiting staff. Meal portions were generous.
Lovely hotel situated in a great location to enjoy all Melrose has to offer.
Excellent breakfast, quiet location with no street noise.
Pleasant bar with a good range of drinks.
Location, very convenient for us. Receptionist in duty when we arrived was pleasant and efficient. Breakfast was adequate. Car parking OK. Grounds were pleasant.
Good central location in Melrose. Staff were helpful and was handy they had parking and a bike store available. Room was spacious and bed was comfortable.
