FAQs about hotels in Durham

Sacred English Heritage

Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.

Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

Durham Cathedral is a must, of all the cathedrals i have visited this must rate as the highest. It was warm, packed with history and information. Great shop, cafe and clean toilets. Durham guided tour of the Castle is also very good, just be aware to do either or both, its going up quite a steep climb. You must take the time to visit the living museum at Beamish, although be prepared to allow two days or at least a day and a half. There is so much to see, and the interaction with the characters on the site is fantastic and so informative. Enjoy the vintage tram and bus rides and dont miss out on puffing Billy. FInally make sure you see the Bowes Museum, it will probably take you 3-4 hours but its worth it.

Beautiful walks and historic building. Worth doing a city waking tour and then a tour of the castle and also one of the cathedral. Got so much from each of these . Had lovely Sunday lunch in ‘Townhouse, cake in the ‘Riverview Kitchen’ but breakfasts looked amazing.

Breakfast and food were great , steak a little pricey for a pub in my opinion as it was premium steakhouse price. Bar staff had 4 tables to serve and did at their leisure which one table waited 40mins , very slow hate to see a full house. Rooms below modern standard , bathroom well below , location not far from durham. Staff really nice. Forgetably stay 👍

The cathedral is amazing and well worth a visit.

The cathedral is amazing and well worth a visit. Lovely stained glass windows. Burial place of St. Cuthbert. The castle is a short walk away but not so easy to access it seems. The Dun Cow is said to be the oldest pub in Durham. It's a cosy stop for a drink and is worth a visit. The Station House below the railway station is an interesting looking spot tucked away under the railway bridge. It looks like a nice place to go for a drink prior to any train journey. There are some lovely bridges and viaducts in the city. Leonard's cafe is another great spot with delicious cakes. Buses are a good way to get around if you don't have a car. The ring road around Durham is too close to the city centre and spoils it somewhat for pedestrians. There are too many busy roads and roundabouts close to the city centre.

We needed a hotel to go to a funeral and stop over for a couple of extra days to be with the family. the location of the hotel is great with it being close to the city centre. We didn't choose a river view but the view from the rear was equally as good and the main northern rail line wasn't a problem as all trains were going slow due to Durham station being very close. We've stayed at several hotels in the area and the Raddisson is probbaly the best there. It's far enough away from the night life for it not to be intrusive.

Our host was attentive and thoughtful, the house was clean and very comfy with great heating and lots of hot water - very easy to park outside and just 10 mins to Durham. Great value for 4 people and we were easily able to go to Durham for the morning and afternoon, pop back to relax for an hour or so then head back to the city as the apartment was so close to the city centre - bigger than a hotel room would have been for a family of 4 and really quite perfect for us.

This accommodation was perfect for our needs. It was absolutely simple to find and surpassed our expectations from the moment we opened the front door. It all looks like new with comfortable beds, clean towels and is spotlessly clean throughout. I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you need a place with an easy drive or bus to Durham City centre, this is the place. Communication with the hosts was faultless and the welcome we received was lovely.

The property is a short distance from Durham city centre and there is a supermarket opposite. The owners / managers were very professional and very kind allowing me to stay after the check out time as I had an online work meeting scheduled that day at short notice. The breakfast was very nice and the place is clean. I’d recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a clean and reasonable priced place to stay when visiting Durham.

Really nice place. Very elegant and on a quiet street. The proprietor was very friendly and helpful. We stayed in 7 places in the UK and this topped them all. You can do Durham in a day but I liked how small and charming it is. Restaurant recommendations are Cellar Door for a fancy meal and Whitechurch Free House for a very good meal and a nice walk to it. Lots of good breakfast options.
